For millions of Indian students and working professionals, English proficiency exams are critical gateways — whether the goal is studying abroad, landing a high-paying job, or clearing a government recruitment process. A strong score on the speaking section can set you apart from thousands of competitors who share similar academic profiles. Yet speaking remains the most under-practiced skill because traditional prep relies on textbooks that never talk back.
This hub covers the major exams where spoken English is evaluated. IELTS Speaking tests your ability to discuss everyday topics and abstract ideas across three parts. TOEFL Speaking, redesigned in January 2026, has you repeat short sentences exactly and answer interview questions about campus life, all scored by AI. PTE Speaking is scored entirely by algorithms, making pronunciation and fluency decisive. Campus Placement rounds — group discussions, HR interviews, and JAM sessions — filter candidates at virtually every Indian engineering and management college. Competitive Exams such as SSC CGL and Bank PO descriptive or interview stages increasingly weigh communication skills. The Duolingo English Test, a newer online-proctored alternative, includes a graded speaking section that universities worldwide now accept.
What makes these speaking sections difficult is not vocabulary alone — it is the pressure of thinking, structuring, and delivering answers in real time with correct grammar, natural intonation, and clear pronunciation. There is no "re-read the paragraph" safety net. Hesitation, filler words, and off-topic rambling are penalised by both human examiners and automated scoring engines.
Speaking out loud, against a clock, is the only practice that closes this gap. On TalkDrill you can take IELTS Speaking practice (Parts 1–3, with timed Part 2 cue cards and a band estimate), read passages aloud in Read Aloud practice with every word scored (useful for the PTE and Duolingo read-aloud tasks), and rehearse placement and bank interviews in mock interview rounds or a group discussion with three AI speakers. Repeated practice builds the muscle memory needed to respond confidently under timed pressure.
