Duolingo English Test

Complete Duolingo English Test preparation with speaking tips, scoring strategies, and practice techniques to score 130+ on the DET.

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a fully online, computer-adaptive English proficiency exam that can be taken from home in approximately one hour. Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, which require booking a test centre weeks in advance, the DET is available on demand, 24/7, with results delivered within 48 hours. Its affordability (around $65 compared to $200+ for other tests) and convenience have made it an increasingly popular alternative, now accepted by over 5,000 institutions worldwide including universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

The test uses an adaptive format — the difficulty of each question adjusts based on your previous answers, producing a precise score between 10 and 160. Speaking tasks in the DET include Read Aloud (pronounce on-screen sentences), Speak About the Photo (describe an image for 90 seconds), and Listen and Speak (respond verbally to an audio prompt). The speaking subscore contributes to both the Conversation and Production subscores that universities evaluate alongside the overall score.

The DET's growing popularity stems from its accessibility and quick turnaround, making it ideal for students with tight application deadlines or those in cities without nearby IELTS or TOEFL test centres. Many Indian students now submit DET scores for admissions to universities that previously accepted only IELTS or TOEFL.

Preparation strategies include practising timed responses to visual prompts, building fluency with spontaneous speaking exercises, and familiarising yourself with the computer-based interface. Since the test is proctored via webcam, ensure you have a quiet, well-lit space and a stable internet connection on test day.
