HR Interview Questions and Answers

What They Are Really Asking — and How to Answer

"Tell me about yourself" is not a request for your life story, and "What is your greatest weakness?" is not an invitation to confess. This book takes 120 questions you will actually face in an HR round and decodes each one: what the interviewer is really testing, why the question arrives when it does, two model answers you can adapt — one for freshers, one for experienced candidates — and the single most common trap. Eight chapters covering the opening questions, strengths and weaknesses, company fit, behavioural scenarios, salary and notice period, gaps and switches, closing questions, and the questions you should be asking them.

Chapter 1: The Opening Questions

1

So, tell me about yourself.

What they are really asking

The interviewer is testing whether you can select the relevant parts of your own story and organise them under mild pressure. It is a structure test, not a life history test.

Model answers

Model answer - fresher

“I am a final year B.Com student at Osmania University, and my strongest area is working with numbers. I built an expense tracker in Excel for our college fest committee, and they still use it to plan the budget. Over the last six months I have finished a Power BI certification and practised on two public datasets on my own. I am now looking for a role where I handle real business data every day, which is why this analyst opening interested me.”

Model answer - experienced

“I have three years of experience in customer support at a fintech company, where I handle around forty tickets a day and mentor two junior agents. Last year I rewrote our refund response templates, and our average first reply time came down noticeably. I now want to move closer to the product side of the business, and this role sits exactly at that intersection, which is why I applied.”

Avoid this: Avoid opening with your birthplace, your father's occupation and your tenth standard percentage. Keep the personal background for the question that actually asks for it.
