IELTS Speaking Questions and Answers

Band 6 and Band 8, Side by Side

Most IELTS books give you one model answer and leave you to guess what makes it good. This one answers all 120 questions twice. The first answer is competent — not wrong, not embarrassing, and roughly where most prepared candidates land. The second carries the same idea but adds what the marking criteria actually reward, and every card names the three things that changed. Eight chapters cover Part 1 (home, hometown, work, study and the rotating daily-life topics), Part 2 (thirty cue cards on people, places, objects and experiences, with the shape of a two-minute turn spelled out), Part 3 (the abstract discussion on society, work, education and technology) and finally the follow-up probes that derail unprepared candidates — including what to say when you did not catch the question, and what to say when you have genuinely never thought about it. Nothing here is meant to be memorised. Examiners are trained to hear recitation, and it costs you marks.

Chapter 1: Part 1: Home and Hometown

1

Can you tell me your full name, please?

What the examiner is listening for

Nothing here is scored. The examiner is confirming your identity while the recording starts, so all that matters is that you produce one clear, unhurried sentence and let the test begin properly.

Two answers, two bands

Band 6 answer

“My name is Rahul Verma.”

Band 8 answer

“My full name is Rahul Verma, though almost everyone at work just calls me Rahul.”

Avoid this: Launching into a rehearsed two minute introduction here. The examiner has not asked for one, and starting the test with recitation sets exactly the wrong expectation for the next twelve minutes.
