MBA Interview (WAT and PI)
IIM and B-school admissions: CAT 2026 date, the WAT and personal interview rounds, what the panel asks, and how to practise speaking under pressure.
Every top B-school in India ends its admission with a spoken round. The IIMs call it the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview (WAT-PI); IIM Ahmedabad runs an Analytical Writing Test and PI; most other schools run a group discussion and PI. The CAT percentile gets you the call; the interview, together with your academics and work experience, decides the admit. At the older IIMs the PI and WAT carry a large share of the final composite score, large enough that a 99 percentile with a weak interview loses to a 97 with a strong one.
The 2026-27 timeline
CAT 2026 is on Sunday, 29 November 2026, in three sessions; VARC is roughly a third of the paper. Results come in early January, the IIM shortlists follow within days, and the WAT-PI rounds run through February and March across cities. XAT, SNAP, NMAT and CMAT feed the non-IIM schools on their own calendars. The block on this page keeps the current dates, and the upcoming exam dates page lists everything else that is due.
What the interview covers
Panels of two or three faculty, sometimes with an alumnus, spend fifteen to thirty minutes on: your academics (freshers get their final-year subjects in depth), your work (what you did, not what your team did), why MBA and why now, current affairs and the economy, your hometown and its industry, and your hobbies taken seriously. The WAT gives you fifteen to thirty minutes to write on a topic, often an abstract or a policy question, and your essay is sometimes used as a prompt in the PI that follows.
How speaking is judged
The panel is listening for structure before vocabulary. Answers that open with the point, give two reasons and stop are read as clarity of thought; the same content delivered as a story that reaches the point in the fourth sentence is read as muddled. English is the medium at every IIM, and a halting answer costs more than an accent ever will. Rehearse the three questions you will certainly get until they come out in under a minute each: tell me about yourself (or the experienced version), why MBA, and why this school.
Practice plan from result day to interview day
Six weeks is enough if you speak every day. Weeks one and two: academics and work, one topic a day explained aloud to a listener who knows nothing about it. Weeks three and four: current affairs, one extempore topic a day for two minutes, and two WAT essays a week against the clock. Weeks five and six: full mock interviews with hostile follow-ups, and AI group discussions for the schools that still run a GD, using the GD phrases that get you into a crowded discussion politely. Record everything and listen for the two fatal habits: answers that start with "so basically", and silence longer than three seconds after a hard question.
