The short answer: at IIM Calcutta the interview is 48 of 100
For the MBA 2027-29 batch, IIM Calcutta scores final selection out of 100 points: personal interview 48, CAT 2026 score 30, Writing Ability Test (WAT) 8, work experience 8 and academic diversity 6. That is the table in IIM Calcutta’s admission procedure for domestic candidates, which we read on 20 October 2026 and re-read on 21 October. It is the only 2027-29 IIM policy we could fetch this week, so it is the only IIM on this page with numbers. The other IIMs publish their own weights in their own PDFs, and the direction is the same everywhere we have read in past cycles: the CAT score decides whether you are in the room, and the room decides whether you get in. We describe those IIMs without figures below rather than guess.
| IIM Calcutta, MBA 2027-29, final selection | Points | Share of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| Personal interview (PI) | 48 | Just under half |
| CAT 2026 score | 30 | Under a third |
| Writing Ability Test (WAT), the procedure’s own name for it | 8 | Same as work experience |
| Work experience | 8 | Maximum, by completed months as of 31 January 2027 |
| Academic diversity | 6 | Maximum; 0 for engineers, 4 for a non-engineering bachelor’s, 5 or 6 for CA, ICWA, CS or FIAI depending on the degree held alongside it, per the procedure’s table below |
| Total | 100 |
Three things follow. First, PI plus WAT is 56 points, more than CAT, academics and work experience put together. Second, the CAT score you spent a year on is already banked by the time you walk in; nothing you do in February changes it. Third, the interview is the one component where a few weeks of rehearsal moves a double-digit number of points. The rest of this page walks through the three stages at IIM Calcutta in order, then shows what one interview can move, then explains what we know and do not know about the other IIMs.
- Stage I is a floor, not a score: sectional and overall percentiles you must clear to be considered at all.
- Stage II is the shortlist composite: CAT plus academics plus diversity (and at some IIMs work experience), which decides who gets a WAT-PI call.
- Stage III is final selection: the interview and the writing test join the composite, with fresh weights.
- Every weight is per IIM and per year. Quote the document, never last year’s coaching slide.
Stage I: the CAT percentile floors, section by section
Before any composite is computed, IIM Calcutta applies minimum CAT 2026 percentiles in each of the three sections and overall. Per the 2027-29 procedure, these are:
| Category | VARC | DILR | QA | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open | 80 | 80 | 75 | 85 |
| EWS | 70 | 65 | 65 | 75 |
| NC-OBC | 70 | 65 | 65 | 75 |
| SC | 65 | 60 | 60 | 70 |
| ST | 55 | 55 | 55 | 65 |
| PwD | 45 | 45 | 45 | 55 |
Two points that candidates miss. The floors are minimums to be considered, not the percentile at which calls go out; the actual shortlist cut is set by the Stage II composite and the number of calls the institute sends, and IIM Calcutta does not publish that cut in advance. And the sectional floors bite: an engineer with 99 in QA and DILR but 78 in VARC does not clear IIM Calcutta’s open-category floor of 80 in VARC, whatever the overall percentile says. If you are reading this before 29 November, that is one more reason to give VARC its share of the remaining weeks. The procedure also reserves 5 per cent of seats for persons with benchmark disabilities (PwD), under the RPwD Act 2016.
Stage II: the 85-point shortlist composite
Candidates above the floors are ranked on a composite score out of 85, per the 2027-29 procedure: CAT 2026 score 56, class 10 marks up to 10, class 12 marks up to 15, and a gender diversity factor of 4 awarded to female and transgender candidates. Work experience is not part of IIM Calcutta’s shortlist composite. Graduation marks are not part of it either. The board marks convert to points in bands:
| Percentage in the board exam | Class 10 points (max 10) | Class 12 points (max 15) |
|---|---|---|
| 80 and above | 10 | 15 |
| 75 to under 80 | 8 | 12 |
| 70 to under 75 | 6 | 9 |
| 65 to under 70 | 4 | 6 |
| 60 to under 65 | 2 | 3 |
| Under 60 | 0 | 0 |
This table is why two candidates with the same CAT percentile receive different calls. A candidate with 92 per cent in class 10 and 88 in class 12 carries 25 of the 29 non-CAT points before the CAT score is added. A candidate with 68 and 72 carries 4 plus 9, 13 points, a gap of 12 out of 85 that the CAT score has to make up. The CAT part is a straight proportion: the procedure gives it as (A divided by B) multiplied by 56, where A is your CAT 2026 total overall scaled score and B is the maximum possible CAT 2026 total overall scaled score. So a candidate with 90 per cent of the maximum possible scaled score carries 50.4 of the 56 points (our arithmetic), and the board marks table above is the only other variable. Board marks are fixed, CAT is fixed from result day, and the composite is therefore fully known to you on the morning the scorecard arrives. The only use of that knowledge is to decide which calls are realistic and to start preparing for those campuses, not to re-run the sums.
If your board marks are average
It does not mean no IIM call. It means IIM Calcutta’s shortlist leans harder on your CAT score than a strong-academics candidate’s does, and that other IIMs, which weigh components differently in their own policies, may be your more realistic calls. Read every policy you can find before result day and rank the campuses by how their composite treats a profile like yours. Our CAT 2026 dates and shortlists page explains how and when each list arrives.
Stage III: the 100-point final selection
Shortlisted candidates sit a writing ability test and a personal interview. The final merit list, per the 2027-29 procedure, is out of 100: PI 48, CAT 30, WAT 8, work experience 8, academic diversity 6. Notice what changed between the two stages. The CAT score fell from 56 of 85 (about two-thirds) to 30 of 100. Board marks disappeared entirely. Two components that did not exist at Stage II now carry 56 points between them, and two profile components, work experience and academic diversity, enter for the first time.
Work experience: maximum eight points
Points are awarded for completed months of work as of 31 January 2027, up to a maximum of eight, per the procedure. The formula that converts months into points is shown as an image on the page and we could not read it as text, so we will not state it; what the text makes clear is the cap, the cut-off date and what does not count. The procedure counts only work done after the bachelor’s degree was completed, and it excludes “internship, apprenticeship, articleship, training, project or work done as an integral part of curricular requirement or any type of unpaid work”. So a CA’s articleship earns no work experience points at IIM Calcutta, and neither does a final-year internship, however long. For a fresher the allocation is zero, and that is by design, not a penalty: the same procedure gives a fresher the same 48 points to win in the interview as anyone else.
The proof is documentary. Per the procedure, employed candidates need a letter from each employer, on company letterhead and signed by an authorised signatory, stating the start date, end date, designation and a brief description of the role, plus payslips from each employer; self-employed and family-business candidates without payslips need documents such as company registration, licences or tax proof. For a candidate with two years at a services firm, those papers are part of the file the call letter asks for; collect them in November and carry originals.
Academic diversity: up to six points
The procedure lists the academic diversity points by qualification, and the list is worth reading in full because it is not a simple engineer versus non-engineer split:
| Qualification, per IIM Calcutta’s 2027-29 procedure | Points |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s, master’s or integrated master’s degree in an engineering stream | 0 |
| Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s in a non-engineering stream | 2 |
| Bachelor’s degree in a non-engineering stream | 4 |
| Dual bachelor’s degree in law (BA LLB, BSc LLB, BCom LLB, BBA LLB) | 5 |
| Bachelor’s and master’s degrees both in non-engineering streams | 5 |
| CA, ICWA, CS or Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI), without a bachelor’s degree | 5 |
| CA, ICWA, CS or FIAI with a bachelor’s degree | 6 |
| CA, ICWA, CS or FIAI, with or without a bachelor’s degree, plus a master’s degree in a non-engineering stream | 6 |
| Integrated bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s in a non-engineering stream | 6 |
The procedure’s table has two more rows for dual or integrated degrees: a non-engineering bachelor’s with a non-engineering master’s earns 5, and an engineering bachelor’s with a non-engineering master’s earns 1. So a BCom graduate carries 4 points into Stage III, a CA with a BCom or an MCom carries the full 6, and an engineer carries 0. For an engineer those six points are simply not available, which is one more reason the 48 interview points matter to you most of all. For the commerce and CA candidates, the points are real but small: four or six out of 100, against 48 for the conversation in the room.
WAT: eight points
Eight points for a short timed piece of writing on the morning of the interview. The format reported across past cycles is a single topic with a time limit of around twenty minutes; we label that as reported because IIM Calcutta’s procedure gives the weight, not the running order. Our WAT topics and format page has sixty topics with outlines and six model essays written by TalkDrill.
A worked example: what one interview can move
This example is written by TalkDrill. It applies IIM Calcutta’s published 2027-29 weights to two invented candidates. The IIM does not publish how a panel converts an interview into points out of 48, so the PI and WAT figures below are illustrative numbers chosen to show the arithmetic, nothing more.
| Component (max) | Candidate A: engineer, 2 years’ work, polished answers | Candidate B: same profile, same CAT, under-rehearsed |
|---|---|---|
| CAT 2026 (30) | Same as B | Same as A |
| Work experience (8) | Same as B | Same as A |
| Academic diversity (6) | 0 (engineering degree, per the procedure’s table) | 0 (engineering degree) |
| WAT (8) | 6 | 4 |
| PI (48) | 36 | 26 |
| Difference on the day | 12 points out of 100, all of it from the two rounds that happen in February and March | |
Twelve points is more than the whole work experience allocation (8), close to the work experience and academic diversity allocations combined (14), and two-fifths of the maximum CAT contribution (30). Put differently: on IIM Calcutta’s 2027-29 weights, a weak interview can cost more than the entire work experience allocation, and a strong one can overturn a CAT gap that took months to build. The figures 36 and 26 are ours; the weights are the IIM’s. Change the interview numbers to anything you like and the conclusion holds, because 48 points live in one conversation.
What separates A from B in the room is rarely knowledge. In the transcripts we have written and in the experiences candidates report, it is structure (a point, two reasons, a stop), honesty under pressure (“I do not know” said once, calmly), and pace in English, which for most of our readers is a second or third language. Those three are trainable in six weeks. Our mock PI transcripts show the same questions answered both ways, side by side.
The other IIMs: what they publish and why we show no numbers
We tried to read the 2027-29 admission policies of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore on 20 and 21 October 2026. None was readable to us this week, so the table below records what each institute publishes, where, and the status of our check. The components listed are the ones these IIMs have used in past cycles, described without figures; the 2027-29 weights will be added the week we can read them.
| Institute | What its policy covers (past-cycle components, no numbers) | Our check, 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | A shortlist built on CAT with academic weight and category-wise criteria, then an Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and PI; final selection combines CAT, AWT, PI and profile. | The PGP pages we tried on iima.ac.in returned 404; unverified. Check the PGP admission page on iima.ac.in for the 2027-29 PDF. |
| IIM Bangalore | A profile-heavy shortlist (CAT, class 10, class 12, graduation, gender diversity, work experience) then WAT and PI, with the final score combining them. | iimb.ac.in returned 403 to every fetcher; unverified. |
| IIM Lucknow | Shortlist on CAT, academics, diversity and work experience; then WAT and PI. | On 21 October the admissions page on iiml.ac.in loaded but showed only a general overview and no 2027-29 policy document; the PGP policy pages we tried earlier returned 404. Unverified. |
| IIM Kozhikode | Shortlist on CAT with academic and diversity components; then WAT and PI. | The admission pages we tried on iimk.ac.in returned 404; unverified. |
| IIM Indore | Shortlist on CAT and academics with diversity; then WAT and PI, with CAT re-weighted at the final stage. | On 21 October the PGP admissions page on iimidr.ac.in still linked the 2026-28 procedure PDFs only; no 2027-29 document yet. |
| IIM Calcutta | All three stages quoted above. | Verified: procedure page read 20 and 21 October 2026. |
Why not quote last year’s numbers for those five? Because the task of this page is to be right, and a weight from 2026-28 presented as 2027-29 is wrong in a way a candidate cannot detect. Coaching slides and news articles recycle old tables every January; when you see a weight, ask which batch’s PDF it comes from. If the answer is not “the 2027-29 document on the institute’s own site”, treat it as a description, not a number. The official resources page keeps the link for each institute with its verified or unverified status.
What the weights mean for your next ten weeks
Translate the IIM Calcutta table into hours and the plan writes itself. Between the CAT result in the first week of January 2027 (tentative, per the CAT 2026 advertisement) and the WAT-PI window our dates block carries as 1 February to 31 March 2027 (expected), you have roughly four to eight weeks. The CAT points are fixed. The board marks are fixed. Work experience months are counted as of 31 January 2027. Everything you can still move sits in the 56 points for WAT and PI, so that is where the hours go.
| Points you can still move | Daily work | Where |
|---|---|---|
| PI, 48 | One timed mock a day from December: profile questions first (tell me about yourself, why MBA, your work or your project), then academics from your degree, then current affairs. Record it, listen for fillers and for answers without a stop. | TalkDrill mock interview and the IIM PI question bank |
| WAT, 8 | One 20-minute essay a day for three weeks; outline for three minutes, write for fifteen, read for two. | WAT topics and format |
| Spoken English inside the PI | Ten minutes of reading aloud and one answer rebuilt as point, two reasons, stop. The panel does not grade accent; it grades whether the answer lands. | Spoken English for the PI |
If you have a work experience certificate to collect, a category certificate to renew or a graduation mark sheet in another city, do it in November; the documents are part of the score at Stage III, and a missing original on the day is the cheapest way to lose points you had already earned. The full week-by-week version, with the documents checklist and the travel plan between campuses, is the CAT result to PI day roadmap. For everything else that is dated, the all exam dates page is rendered from the same file as the dates block above, so the two can never disagree.
