The plan in one paragraph
You have about six weeks between the CAT 2026 result and your first IIM interview, and the interview is worth more than the exam. Per IIM Calcutta's MBA 2027-29 admission procedure, final selection weighs the personal interview at 48 points of 100, the written ability test at 8 and the CAT score at 30. Other IIMs publish their own weights and we do not guess at them, but at IIM Calcutta, the one policy we quote, the room decides more than the scorecard. So this plan spends six weeks, 45 to 60 minutes a day, six days a week, in a fixed order: week 1, your own profile and a recorded baseline mock; week 2, academics and the work story; week 3, why MBA and a current-affairs method; week 4, WAT, GD and extempore; week 5, three full scored mocks and the spoken-English layer; week 6, documents, travel, dress and a taper. Every day is one action with a link, and the whole thing is also a coach plan on the hub so you can tick days off. If your call letter gives you less time, the three-week variant below keeps the order and cuts the volume.
- CAT 2026 takers waiting for IIM calls: engineers with zero to three years of work, commerce and CA graduates, and freshers.
- XAT, SNAP, NMAT and CMAT candidates heading to XLRI, SIBM, NMIMS, IIFT and similar GD-PI rounds. Week 4 is yours in particular.
- Anyone whose first language is Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada or Malayalam and who has never been interviewed in English for twenty minutes by three strangers. Every interview in this family is in English.
The calendar you are planning against
Dates first, because the plan only works if you start it on the right day. The dated rows below are the ones on our exam dates page, and where a date is a pattern rather than an announcement we say so.
| Event | Date | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| CAT 2026 exam | Sunday 29 November 2026, three sessions | Per iimcat.ac.in and the CAT 2026 advertisement (PDF on iimcal.ac.in) |
| CAT 2026 result | First week of January 2027 | The advertisement's own word is "tentative" |
| IIM shortlists | January 2027 | Pattern from past cycles, not an announcement; each IIM publishes its own list |
| IIM WAT and PI rounds | 1 February to 31 March 2027 | Expected window in our dates block; each call letter gives the exact date and city |
| SNAP 2026 | 13, 19 and 26 December 2026 | Per snaptest.org, read 21 October 2026; the GE-PI round is run separately by each institute after the result |
| XAT 2027 | Sunday 3 January 2027, 2 to 5 pm | Per the Important Timelines block on xatonline.in, read 21 October 2026; registration 15 July to 6 December 2026. An older strip showing 5 January sits in a hidden part of the same page and is stale |
| NMAT and CMAT | Not verified this week | mba.com is script-only to our fetcher; the NTA CMAT site had no 2027 notice when read. Our other exams page tracks both |
The practical reading of that table: the plan's day 1 is the day you read your CAT scorecard, in the first week of January. If the result lands on a Monday and your first interview is in the third week of February, you have exactly six weeks. Candidates who wait for the shortlist mail before starting lose one to two of them. Candidates with XLRI or SIBM calls may have GD-PI dates in February as well, so the same six weeks serve both.
Six weeks, week by week
The full day-by-day plan with links is rendered below this article from the roadmap data; this section explains why each week is where it is, and what the week should leave you holding.
| Week | Theme | Daily minutes | What you hold at the end of the week |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Know the room, and know yourself on paper | 40 to 50 | A one-page profile sheet, a two-minute introduction, a recorded baseline mock scored on five criteria, and a documents inventory per call |
| 2 | Academics and the work story | 45 to 50 | Six academic topics you can explain to a non-expert in ninety seconds, a plain-English project summary with one limitation, two work stories told as decisions, and the gap or exit questions answered honestly |
| 3 | Why MBA, goals and current affairs | 45 to 50 | A why-MBA answer under 60 seconds that survives three follow-ups, why-now and why-this-school lines, a running notebook of news stories in a fixed three-sentence shape, and the hometown and hobby questions to five minutes of depth |
| 4 | WAT, GD and extempore | 45 to 50 | Four timed 20-minute WAT pieces in the five-part shape, two AI group discussions with an entry, two builds and a summary, and three two-minute extempores recorded |
| 5 | Full mocks and the spoken-English layer | 45 to 50 | Three full 20-minute mocks scored, your two first-language habits named and drilled, fillers counted and halved, panel manners rehearsed |
| 6 | Taper, documents, travel and the day | 15 to 45 | The folder in call-letter order, every journey booked with a buffer night, the dress set out, one short mock compared with the baseline, and nothing new learnt in the last 48 hours |
Why the profile comes before the newspaper
A common planning mistake is to spend January reading the business pages and walk into the room unable to explain the subject you scored 82 per cent in. Panels open with you, they test whether you understand what your own CV claims, and only then do they test the world. Freshers are grilled on academics because that is all there is; engineers with two years at a services company are asked what in the project was theirs; commerce and CA candidates get their own core papers turned into applied questions. Week 1 and week 2 exist so that the first eight minutes of the interview, which are about you, are the strongest eight.
Why the mocks are spread, not stacked
Seven mocks across six weeks, scored on the same five criteria each time (structure, depth, honesty, composure, language; the sheet is on the mock PI page). A baseline in week 1 gives you a number to beat. One focused mock in each of weeks 2 and 3 tests that week's material under pushback. Three full mocks in week 5 build stamina and composure. One short mock in week 6 is a warm-up, not a test. Candidates who do ten mocks in the last four days arrive tired and with the same two faults they had on day one, because nothing was fixed between attempts.
A worked week (written by TalkDrill)
Priya, a fictional mechanical engineer with 22 months at an auto-components supplier in Pune, Marathi first language, holds calls from IIM Calcutta and IIM Kozhikode with a first interview on 18 February. Her result day is 5 January. Week 1: profile sheet done on day 2; the baseline mock on day 4 scores 2 on depth and 2 on composure out of 5 because she describes her role as "I was part of the team that" four times. Week 2: both work stories rewritten as decisions ("I proposed moving the inspection step earlier; it cost two days of line time and cut rework by a figure I can quote"). Week 3: her why-MBA answer names the gap (she cannot move from quality to operations planning without a general management grounding), what she tried (an internal transfer request refused twice), and why IIM Calcutta (one named course and one faculty area, both checked on the institute site). Week 5: mock six scores 4 and 4. The point of the example is not the scores; it is that each week produced one thing the next week used.
The three-week variant
If your first call letter arrives with three weeks to go, or your result is late, keep the order and cut the volume. The variant below is the same six themes in three weeks at 60 to 75 minutes a day; it drops the second and third focused mocks and halves the WAT count.
| Week | Days 1 to 2 | Days 3 to 4 | Days 5 to 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Profile sheet and the two-minute introduction (day 1); baseline mock, scored, and the documents inventory (day 2) | Six academic topics, three a day, each explained aloud in ninety seconds; the project in plain English | Two work stories as decisions, the gap and exit questions; a 20-minute mock on academics and work only |
| 2 | Why MBA in the frame, under 60 seconds; why now, why this school, the goals chain | Current-affairs method started (three stories a day, three sentences each); hometown and hobbies to depth; stress questions | Two timed WAT pieces (one policy, one abstract); one AI group discussion and three extempores if you hold a GD-PI call |
| 3 | Full mock one, scored; the spoken-English page for your first language; filler count and pause drill | Full mock two with a human interviewer who interrupts; panel manners; documents in call-letter order | Travel and dress set; a ten-minute mock compared with the baseline; last seven days of news only; read-aloud warm-up the night before |
Two rules for the compressed plan. First, never skip the baseline mock to save a day; without it you cannot tell whether week 3 improved anything. Second, if you hold only IIM calls, give the GD day to a third WAT piece instead. If you hold only XLRI, SIBM or NMIMS calls, give one WAT day to a second group discussion on TalkDrill GD.
Where WAT and GD sit in the plan
WAT is in week 4, not week 1, for a reason: by week 4 you have a why-MBA position, a current-affairs notebook and two weeks of explaining things aloud, and a WAT piece is those three skills on paper under a clock. The WAT topics and format page has the five-part shape (position, two reasons, the strongest objection, a close), 60 topics with outlines and six model essays written by TalkDrill. No IIM publishes a WAT duration or word limit in the policy pages we have read, and candidates report that both vary by campus and year, so the plan rehearses at 20 minutes and you adjust on the day to whatever the invigilator announces. At IIM Calcutta the Writing Ability Test is 8 of 100 points in final selection, per its 2027-29 procedure: small, but candidates report that panels can read it before you walk in, and a confused essay may be the first thing they know about you.
GD is in the same week because the skills are shared. IIM Calcutta's 2027-29 procedure lists a Writing Ability Test and a personal interview and no group round, and candidates report the same WAT-then-PI shape at most IIMs. XLRI (through XAT), the Symbiosis institutes (SNAP calls its round "Group Exercise and Personal Interaction", per snaptest.org), NMIMS, IIFT and many CMAT-accepting schools do run a group round, with formats that vary and are best described as candidates report them. The GD topics page has 80 topics with points and the entry, build and summary lines. Even if you hold IIM calls only, one group discussion in week 4 is worth the hour: it teaches you to make a point in 40 seconds and to build on someone else's, which is exactly what a three-member panel wants when two of them speak at once. The GD topic generator gives you fresh topics, and the extempore list covers the one-minute opener some schools use, as candidates report.
Documents for IIM and other calls
The call letter or the institute's admissions page is the only list that counts, and it will tell you whether photocopies must be self-attested, how many photographs, and which form to print and fill. The list below is the usual set, assembled so that you order anything missing in week 1 rather than week 6; a transcript or a duplicate mark sheet from a university can take weeks to arrive.
| Document | Notes | Order by |
|---|---|---|
| CAT 2026 admit card and scorecard | Printed from iimcat.ac.in; carry two copies. The scorecard is tied to the email and mobile number from registration | Result week |
| Class 10 and class 12 mark sheets and certificates | Originals plus copies. Board certificates, not school leaving letters, where the call letter says certificate | Week 1 if any original is missing |
| Graduation mark sheets, all semesters or years, and the degree or provisional certificate | Final-year students carry every mark sheet issued so far and a bona fide or course-completion letter from the college if the call letter asks | Week 1; duplicates from a university are slow |
| Work-experience proof | IIM Calcutta's 2027-29 procedure asks for a letter from the employer on company letterhead with an authorised signatory, plus payslips, and counts length of service as on 31 January 2027. Other IIMs state their own cut-off date in their own policy; check it | Week 1; HR letters take time, and your manager may need to sign |
| Category certificate (NC-OBC, EWS, SC, ST) or PwD certificate | In the format the IIM prescribes, and within any validity window the policy sets for OBC non-creamy-layer and EWS certificates. Read the format rule twice; this certificate carries the most conditions | Week 1; a tehsil or district office can take weeks |
| Photo ID | The same ID you used at the CAT centre, plus one more | Have it |
| Photographs | Recent, ideally matching your CAT registration photo, as many copies as the call letter asks for plus spares | Week 1 |
| The institute's own form or declaration | Some IIMs ask you to print a profile form from their portal and bring it filled; some collect it at the venue | As soon as the call letter arrives |
| Gap or extra-attempt documents | A gap year after class 12 or graduation may need a self-declaration; have the honest one-paragraph explanation ready as well as the paper | Week 2, with the gap answer |
Arrange one folder per institute in the exact order the call letter lists, originals in one sleeve and the photocopy set in another. Where verification happens before the WAT, as candidates report it often does, the candidate searching a backpack for a class 10 certificate while the others sit down is the candidate who writes the WAT flustered.
Dress, travel between campuses and the morning
Dress
No IIM we have read states a dress code in its admission policy. The convention candidates follow, and which we recommend because it removes a decision from the morning, is formal: a plain, pressed shirt and trousers with formal shoes; a blazer or suit only if you are comfortable in one and the city is cold enough; a saree, a formal kurta set or a shirt and trousers for women. Pick clothes you have sat in for hours, because the waiting room is where most of the day goes. Nothing you are wearing will earn a point; something that distracts you can lose one.
Travel between campuses
Interview cities are assigned or chosen per call, and in February a candidate with four calls can have Kolkata, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad within ten days. Book every leg the day the dates are out; February trains and flights between those cities fill. Plan a buffer night before each interview, check the reporting time and the exact gate on a map the night before, and keep the folder in your hand luggage, never checked in. If two institutes give you the same date, write to both admissions offices at once; ask early, while slots can still move.
The morning
No new reading. Five minutes of read-aloud so the first sentence you say in English that day is not "good morning, sir" in the room. Water, a light breakfast, a 90-minute margin. In the queue, do not compare notes with the candidate next to you about what the panel asked; it rarely transfers and it always unsettles. In the room: listen to the whole question, answer the question asked, stop when it is answered, and treat "I do not know" as a complete, calm sentence when it is true.
How to know the plan is working
Three measurements, all of which the plan already produces.
- The five scores. Baseline mock in week 1, mock six in week 5, mock seven in week 6, all on the same self-score sheet. The two criteria you circled in week 1 should each have moved by at least one point out of five by week 5. If one has not, that is the only thing week 6 works on.
- The answer lengths. Time your introduction, your why-MBA answer and one academic explanation in week 1 and again in week 5. The introduction should sit near two minutes, why MBA under sixty seconds, an academic explanation under ninety. Answers that got longer are answers that got less structured.
- The filler count. Count "basically", "actually", "like" and "you know" in a three-answer stretch of the week 1 recording and the week 5 recording. The target is half. The spoken English page has the first-language drills behind this, weighted for Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam speakers.
What the plan cannot measure is luck in the room: the panel's mood, the question outside your reading. What it can do is make sure that the eight minutes about you are the strongest eight, that the written piece is shaped, that your documents are in order and that your voice is warm. At IIM Calcutta that is 56 of 100 points (PI 48 plus WAT 8, per its 2027-29 procedure) decided in one morning. Start on result day. The AI mock interview is where week 1, day 4 begins.
