PTE Speaking
Complete PTE Academic Speaking preparation with tips, strategies, and practice for all speaking task types.
The PTE Academic Speaking section is part of the combined Speaking and Writing segment, lasting approximately 54-67 minutes. It includes five task types: Read Aloud (read a text on screen), Repeat Sentence (listen and reproduce a sentence verbatim), Describe Image (analyse a graph, chart, or picture and describe it in 40 seconds), Re-tell Lecture (summarise a lecture you just heard), and Answer Short Question (give a one-word or brief response to a factual question).
What sets PTE apart from IELTS is that it is entirely computer-scored (the TOEFL iBT has also scored its Speaking section with AI since its January 2026 redesign). There is no human examiner —sophisticated algorithms evaluate your responses by analysing audio waveforms for pronunciation accuracy, oral fluency, and content relevance. This means the scoring is consistent and objective, but it also means you cannot rely on an examiner's goodwill or contextual understanding. The machine rewards clear enunciation, natural pacing, and smooth delivery without false starts or long pauses.
Microphone clarity is critical in PTE. Speaking too close to the mic causes distortion, while speaking too far results in low volume that the algorithm may misinterpret. Maintain a consistent distance of about 5-8 centimetres, speak at a steady pace, and avoid whispering or shouting. Background noise can also affect scoring, so practise in a quiet environment.
Tips for high scores include chunking sentences into meaningful phrase groups, stressing content words naturally, and maintaining a conversational rhythm rather than reading in a monotone. Regular practice with recorded playback helps you identify and correct pronunciation habits that automated scoring systems penalise.
