UPSC Personality Test

UPSC Civil Services Personality Test: the 275-mark interview, the board, the medium you can choose, DAF-based questions, dates and how to practise speaking.

The Personality Test is the last stage of the Civil Services Examination and the only one where the examiners can see you. It carries 275 marks against 1,750 for the Mains, so a difference of forty marks in the room is the difference between IAS and a lower service, or between the list and the reserve list. It is not a knowledge test; the UPSC's own notification says the board is judging mental alertness, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, social cohesion and leadership, and intellectual and moral integrity. Every one of those is observed through how you speak.

The board and the room

A board has five members, chaired by a UPSC member, and the interview usually runs between twenty-five and thirty-five minutes. The questions come from your Detailed Application Form (DAF): home town and state, school and college, graduation subject, optional subject, work experience, hobbies, service and cadre preferences. Expect a current-affairs thread tied to your background (a Kerala candidate gets asked about Kerala's fiscal position; an engineer gets asked about semiconductor policy) and one or two situational questions that test judgement rather than facts.

Which language

You may take the interview in English, Hindi or any language in the Eighth Schedule, whatever medium you wrote the Mains in, and an interpreter is arranged if needed. Most candidates choose English, and many who choose Hindi still answer technical questions in English. If you choose English, the board is not grading your accent; it is grading whether your sentences land. Short, complete answers with one reason each read as clarity. Long answers that circle the point read as the opposite of "logical exposition".

When the 2026 cycle runs

The 2026 Personality Test dates are not announced. The last cycle ran from 8 December 2025 to 27 February 2026, starting about two weeks after the Mains result. The dates block on this page will show the schedule the day UPSC publishes it, and the upcoming exam dates page carries the 2027 prelims notification (13 January 2027, applications until 2 February).

How to prepare the speaking, not just the content

Most aspirants prepare the DAF thoroughly and the delivery not at all. Three habits move marks. First, answer the question that was asked, in the first sentence, then add one supporting point; boards cut off candidates who warm up. Second, say "I don't know, sir, but I would reason it this way" when you don't know, and then reason; bluffing is the fastest way to lose the integrity marks. Third, keep your pace steady under pressure, because the board will deliberately interrupt. Rehearse with AI mock boards built from your DAF entries, one topic a day for three weeks, and record yourself. Our structured-answer scripts and self-introduction frameworks for working professionals transfer directly to the opening minutes.

How many marks is the UPSC interview?

The Personality Test carries 275 marks. The Mains carry 1,750, so the interview is about 14% of the final 2,025.

Can I give the UPSC interview in Hindi if I wrote Mains in English?

Yes. The medium of the interview is your choice: English, Hindi or any Eighth Schedule language, independent of your Mains medium. An interpreter is provided where needed.

When is the UPSC CSE 2026 Personality Test?

Not announced as of 19 October 2026. The previous cycle ran from 8 December to 27 February, beginning roughly two weeks after the Mains result. The schedule appears in the dates block on this page once UPSC publishes it.

How long does the UPSC interview last?

Typically twenty-five to thirty-five minutes, though boards vary. A shorter interview does not mean a lower score.

What are DAF-based questions?

Questions drawn from your Detailed Application Form: your home state and district, education, optional subject, work, hobbies and service preferences. Most interviews open with these and link current affairs to them.
