CELPIP

The CELPIP guide for Canada PR and citizenship: General and LS formats, the eight Speaking tasks, levels 0 to 12 and the CLB chart, fees in India and Canada, results, and a 30-day plan to CLB 9.

CELPIP is Canada’s computer-delivered English test, run by Paragon Testing Enterprises. CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in one sitting of under three hours, and it is the version IRCC designates for permanent residence, including Express Entry; Australia’s Department of Home Affairs accepts it too. CELPIP-General LS tests Listening and Speaking only, takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and is the version for Canadian citizenship. Speaking is eight tasks in 15 minutes, spoken into a microphone with no examiner in the room. Each skill gets a level from 0 to 12, and from 3 to 12 the CELPIP level is the CLB level. The number most readers chase is CLB 9: IRCC’s points grid gives a single applicant 31 points per skill at CLB 9 against 17 at CLB 7. The thing most candidates get wrong is blaming their accent for a 7. CELPIP says an accent does not automatically lower a Speaking score. Its Listenability criterion also weighs grammar, pauses and sentence variety, and Level 9 asks for developed reasons and context-specific words, which you can train in a month.

Format, exactly

Both versions are taken at a test centre on a computer, in one sitting, with no separate speaking appointment. The timings and question counts below are from celpip.ca’s CELPIP-General, CELPIP-General LS and Test Format and Scoring pages, read on 21 October 2026.

Speaking comes last. Per CELPIP’s Speaking Pro Target 9+ Study Pack (revised May 2026), most tasks give 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak; Tasks 1 and 7 give 90 seconds to speak, Task 6 gives 60 seconds to prepare, and Task 5 gives 60 seconds to choose between two options without speaking, then 60 to prepare and 60 to speak. When the preparation time ends, the screen moves on and recording starts by itself. Three test-room facts from celpip.ca’s test-day page matter for Speaking: you may hear other candidates speaking and typing, which CELPIP calls a standard test room condition; you get a pen and notepaper; and you must arrive 45 minutes early, because check-in closes 15 minutes before the start and late arrivals lose the fee. Practise with background noise, and at a normal speaking volume: the Study Pack says speaking too loudly or too softly can hurt Listenability, and that raters hear you clearly at normal volume despite the room noise. The format page walks through the Speaking room minute by minute.

The eight Speaking tasks

The eight tasks are numbered and named on celpip.ca’s format page, and you meet them in that order. Each is a small piece of everyday life, usually with a named friend, family member, neighbour or customer, and the raters judge whether you did what that situation needed. The descriptions and timings are from CELPIP’s Speaking Pro Target 9+ Study Pack (revised May 2026); the last column is TalkDrill’s judgement, not CELPIP data.

Our CELPIP Speaking guide is the short overview of all eight. The task-by-task page has an outline, model answers written by TalkDrill and the trap for each task, and the practice bank gives you prompts to run against the timer.

Scoring, decoded

Every component gets a CELPIP level from 0 to 12. CELPIP calibrates its levels against the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and from Level 3 to Level 12 the numbers are the same; Level 2 covers CLB 1 and 2. IRCC’s Express Entry language-testing page (modified 16 October 2026) lists CELPIP 7, 8, 9 and 10 or more as CLB 7, 8, 9 and 10 or more, skill by skill, and gives points per ability, so a 10 in Listening does not make up for an 8 in Speaking.

CELPIP levelCLBCEFRCELPIP’s descriptor
1212C2Expert proficiency in high-stakes contexts
1111C1Advanced proficiency in high-stakes contexts
1010C1Highly effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts
99B2Effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts
88B2Good proficiency in more demanding contexts
77B2Adequate proficiency in somewhat demanding contexts
5 and 65 and 6B1Acquiring and developing proficiency in everyday contexts
3 and 43 and 4A2Some proficiency in limited contexts; adequate for daily life

Speaking is rated by three to five trained raters, each working alone on your recording, per celpip.ca’s results page. If their ratings disagree, a benchmark rater is assigned. They rate four dimensions, each with five performance levels: Content/Coherence (number, quality and organisation of ideas, examples and details), Vocabulary (word choice, precision, range, suitable use), Listenability (rhythm, pronunciation and intonation; pauses, interjections and self-correction; grammar and sentence structure; variety of sentence structure) and Task Fulfillment (relevance, completeness, tone, length). Two things follow. Listenability is not an accent score; grammar and sentence variety sit inside it. And Task Fulfillment includes tone and length, so a correct answer in the wrong register, or one that stops halfway through the timer, loses marks even with perfect pronunciation. The scoring page has the full chart and a self-rating sheet.

Levels, criteria and the CLB chart

Why CLB 9 is the number behind most Express Entry plans

IRCC’s Comprehensive Ranking System criteria page (modified 16 October 2026) gives points for each of the four abilities in your first official language. The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is the largest single step on the grid.

CLB per abilityPoints per ability, with a spousePoints per ability, no spouse
CLB 71617
CLB 82223
CLB 92931
CLB 10 or more3234

For a single applicant, moving all four abilities from CLB 7 to CLB 9 adds 56 core points (14 per ability); with a spouse it adds 52. CLB 9 in all four abilities also doubles the language-linked skill transferability points on the same page: a post-secondary credential of one year or longer earns 13 points with CLB 7 or more and 25 with CLB 9 or more in all four; three or more years of foreign work experience earns 25 and 50. Those rows need all four abilities at 9, so a Speaking 9 alone does not open them. IRCC’s Federal Skilled Worker points table, on the language-testing page, starts at CLB 7. Whether you need 9 depends on your programme and the draws; cut-off scores move with every draw, so we do not quote one here. If your Speaking is at 7 and the rest is close to 9, our 30-day plan is built for you.

Fees, dates and results

CELPIP charges per sitting and sets prices by country. These are the prices shown on celpip.ca on 21 October 2026, read from each country’s test-date table or, for Canada, from the overview and residency pages.

In India, celpip.ca says the test is “widely available across India within 2 weeks at 25 test centers in 15 cities”; the date table we read listed Chandigarh, Bathinda, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Kozhikode and Panjim. The policies on the overview page: cancel at least seven calendar days before the test for a 50 per cent refund, nothing after that; transfer at least seven days before for CAD 50 plus tax; and register for no more than one sitting in any five calendar days. Results appear in your CELPIP account in 2 to 4 business days as an official PDF score report (the overview page says 3 to 4), and you upload that PDF to IRCC. You can ask for a re-evaluation of any component within six months of the test; the fee is refunded for a component whose level changes, and each component can be re-evaluated once. The dates block on this page is checked weekly. The fees page, the dates and centres page and the results page go further.

Fees and booking, step by step

Who takes it, and what each first language finds hard

Permanent residence. CELPIP-General is accepted for Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades), provincial nominee programs, the post-graduation work permit and the Start-Up Visa, per celpip.ca’s Canadian Residency page. IRCC’s Express Entry page says you must take CELPIP-General, and that your results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your application. Citizenship. Applicants aged 18 to 54 must show CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening, per IRCC’s citizenship language page, and CELPIP-General LS is CELPIP’s test for that. Australia. CELPIP’s chart lists Competent English as at least 7 in each component and Proficient English as Listening 9, Reading 8, Writing 10 and Speaking 8.

Our readers are mostly Punjabi speakers from Punjab and Haryana, and Punjabi-Canadians sitting LS for citizenship; then Hindi speakers from Delhi and the north, Gujarati speakers near the Ahmedabad and Vadodara centres, Malayalam speakers near Kochi and Kozhikode, Filipino candidates in Manila and the Gulf, Nigerian candidates in Lagos and Abuja, and Arabic speakers and South Asian workers in the UAE. CELPIP publishes no results by first language, so our first-language pages describe tendencies, each with a fix and a drill, and never invent a statistic. Start with the page for Punjabi, Hindi and Gujarati speakers or the page for Filipino and Nigerian candidates.

Fixes for Punjabi, Hindi and Gujarati speakers

Thirty days from Level 7 to CLB 9 in Speaking

For candidates whose CELPIP Speaking is at Level 7 now and needs to reach 9. Six study days a week of 30 to 45 minutes, one action a day; the seventh day is rest. After week 4, day 28 is rest, day 29 is a ten-minute warm-up and day 30 is the test. Each week trains one part of what separates 7 from 9 in CELPIP’s published level descriptors: structure and developed reasons, then Listenability, then vocabulary and tone, then full mocks. CELPIP’s own 30-day study plan suggests 1.5 to 3 hours a day across all four skills; this roadmap is the Speaking part. If you also need 9 in Writing, add the Writing page on alternate days. The reasoning for every day is on the 30-day plan page.

Week 1: Diagnose and structure

Finish the week with a scored eight-task baseline, a booked test date and one outline you can use on every task.

  1. 40 min: Record a full diagnostic: all eight Speaking tasks from a free official CELPIP practice test, to the on-screen timers, no restarts. The recording is the point, however it goes. CELPIP free practice tests
  2. 30 min: Score yesterday’s recording on the four dimensions with the self-rating sheet. If no dimension is below 7, book a sitting for about day 30; if one is at 5 or 6, use eight weeks instead. self-rating sheet
  3. 30 min: Listen to CELPIP’s official Level 7, 8 and 9 sample responses for the same two tasks. Write down three differences you can hear, in your own words. Score Comparison Chart
  4. 30 min: Learn the four-move outline (point, reason, example, wrap-up) and run Tasks 1 and 7 twice each against the timer, outline first. tasks 1 to 8
  5. 30 min: Tasks 2 and 6 with the AI playing the person named in the prompt. Speak to that person, by name, from the first sentence. role-play practice
  6. 35 min: Tasks 3, 4 and 8 with a describing map: the big picture first, then left to right, then details, then what it means for the listener. CELPIP Speaking guide

Week 2: Listenability

Two sound habits and one grammar habit audibly better on a recording, and half as many restarts as on day 1.

  1. 30 min: Read your first-language page (Punjabi, Hindi and Gujarati, or Filipino and Nigerian). Pick two sound habits and one grammar habit for this week; write them on a card. first-language fixes
  2. 30 min: Ten minutes of read-aloud on sound habit 1, then record Task 1 and listen only for that sound. read-aloud practice
  3. 30 min: Chunking and falling tone: read a 60-word answer aloud with a pause at every comma and a falling voice at every full stop, then record Task 7 the same way. read-aloud practice
  4. 35 min: Grammar inside Listenability: use one complex pattern per answer (if I were you; although; which means that) in Tasks 1, 5 and 7. scoring and criteria
  5. 35 min: Filler audit: count every um, er and restart in your day 1 Task 2, then record a new Task 2 and count again. The target is half. role-play practice
  6. 40 min: Half mock: Tasks 1 to 4 back to back with the timers, scored on the four dimensions. Compare with day 1. practice bank

Week 3: Vocabulary range and tone

Context-specific words in every answer, a tone that fits each listener, and a first full mock scored at 8 or better.

  1. 30 min: Build a word bank of everyday Canadian vocabulary by topic (housing, work, transit, family, community), at least five precise words per task. tasks 1 to 8
  2. 30 min: Task 5: compare with whereas, while and on the other hand, then persuade the named person with a reason that matters to them, not to you. role-play practice
  3. 35 min: Task 6 tone ladder: explain the same decision to a friend, a family member and a customer, recorded back to back. Listen for how the first sentence changes. role-play practice
  4. 35 min: Task 2 with a story arc (setting, problem, what you did, how you felt, what you learned) and Task 7 with a concession (“I can see why some people…”). practice bank
  5. 35 min: Task 8 precision: shape, size, material, parts, what it does, and one comparison with an everyday object. Ban the word “thing”. practice bank
  6. 45 min: Full mock 1: all eight tasks under test conditions with background noise, then score it. This is the first of the two mocks your go-or-transfer decision rests on. mock scoring

Week 4: Full mocks and test day

Two more full mocks, a go-or-transfer decision at least seven days before the test, and a calm test day.

  1. 45 min: Full mock 2 under test conditions. Score it before you look at mock 1 again. practice bank
  2. 20 min: Go or transfer: if mocks 1 and 2 are not at the Level 9 descriptor in every dimension, transfer today. celpip.ca needs seven calendar days for a CAD 50 transfer. fees and booking
  3. 35 min: Fix the lowest dimension from mock 2 with one targeted drill, then re-record the two tasks where it hurt most. scoring and criteria
  4. 45 min: Full mock 3, then listen once more to CELPIP’s official Level 9 samples and compare. Score Comparison Chart
  5. 20 min: Logistics: the same ID you registered with, arrival 45 minutes early (check-in closes 15 minutes before), nothing but your ID in the room, and a timer that never stops. format and test day
  6. 15 min: Warm-up only: Tasks 1 and 7 once each, then stop. Tomorrow is rest; the day after, ten minutes of warm-up and the test. role-play practice

The full plan with the 4-week and 8-week versions

40 CELPIP Speaking prompts: five full mock tests across Tasks 1 to 8

Forty CELPIP Speaking prompts written by TalkDrill, arranged as five complete mock tests of eight tasks each, in the order of the real test and with the preparation and speaking times CELPIP lists in its Speaking Pro: Target 9+ Study Pack (May 2026). Each prompt shows the timer to set, a scoring focus (what the raters will listen for on that task), a model response written by TalkDrill to the Level 9 and 10 descriptors, and a note naming the dimension the prompt really tests. Record your answer before you read the model. Then use the model to find ideas and phrases, never as a script: CELPIP warns that memorised or copied content can lead to results being invalidated, and its raters are listening for spontaneous, original speech.

Task 1: Giving Advice

A cousin buying a used car before his first winter

Your cousin Gurpreet moved to Winnipeg last month. He wants to buy a used car before winter, but he has a small budget and has never driven in snow. Give Gurpreet advice on what he should think about before he buys a car. Preparation time: 30 seconds Speaking time: 90 seconds

Examiner note: Tests Content/Coherence: the number, quality and organisation of ideas, with supporting detail. The usual loss is a list of six quick tips with no reasons, which sounds fluent but never shows moderately complex reasoning. Three developed suggestions, each with a "because" or an "otherwise", beat six bare ones.

Task 2: Talking about a Personal Experience

A time you had to learn something new very quickly

Talk about a time when you had to learn something new very quickly. What did you have to learn, what happened, and how did you feel? Preparation time: 30 seconds Speaking time: 60 seconds

Examiner note: Tests Listenability through control of past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect) and Content through a story with a shape. The usual loss is drifting into the present tense halfway through, or spending 40 seconds on background and never reaching the point of the story.

Task 3: Describing a Scene

A city park on a sunny Saturday

Describe some things that are happening in the picture as well as you can. The person you are speaking to cannot see the picture. Picture (described in words for this practice bank): A city park on a sunny Saturday. In the front, a family sits on a checked picnic blanket; the father is cutting a large watermelon and a little girl is reaching for a slice. On the left, an older couple on a bench are throwing crumbs to a group of pigeons. In the middle, a man kneels beside a bicycle with its front wheel off. Behind him, a dog is racing after a frisbee while its owner shouts. On the right, children are lining up at an ice-cream cart. In the background, volunteers in yellow vests are picking up litter beside a pond. Preparation time: 30 seconds Speaking time: 60 seconds

Examiner note: Tests Vocabulary (precise, context-specific nouns and verbs: "scattering crumbs", "kneeling", "flat tyre") and Content/Coherence through a clear spatial order. The usual loss is "there is a man, there is a dog, there is a tree": a list of nouns with no actions and no organisation.

Task 4: Making Predictions

The park: what happens next

Look at the same picture again. What do you think will most probably happen next? Describe it as well as you can.

Examiner note: Tests Listenability through a range of future structures and Content through predictions that are linked to the picture. The usual loss is describing the scene again in the present continuous, which repeats Task 3 instead of answering Task 4.

Mistakes by first language

The habits examiners mark down depend on the language you grew up speaking. Pick yours.

Your TalkDrill route

  1. Start the CELPIP track. Set CELPIP as your exam and your test date, so the coach plan counts down and serves the day’s task from the 30-day roadmap. Open
  2. One timed task a day. Pick a prompt from the practice bank, run it against the task timer, and let the AI play the friend, neighbour or manager named in the prompt. Listen back once against the four criteria. Open the practice bank
  3. Ten minutes of read-aloud for Listenability. Short passages and sound drills (v and w, th, word stress) recorded and compared. This is the habit work your first-language page prescribes. Read-aloud practice
  4. Fix your first-language habits. Punjabi, Hindi and Gujarati speakers, and Filipino and Nigerian candidates, each have a page with the habits raters notice, the fix and a two-minute drill. First-language fixes
  5. A full eight-task mock every week from week 2. All eight tasks back to back with the timers, scored on the four dimensions against CELPIP’s level descriptors. A human mock with a CELPIP-trained tutor is not on TalkDrill yet; until it is, the AI mock is what we offer, and we say so. See the 30-day plan

What CELPIP score do I need for Canada PR?

It depends on your programme. IRCC’s Federal Skilled Worker points table starts at CLB 7 in each ability, which is CELPIP 7. Most Express Entry candidates aim higher because points climb steeply: a single applicant gets 17 points per ability at CLB 7 and 31 at CLB 9, per IRCC’s CRS criteria page modified 16 October 2026.

Is CELPIP 9 the same as CLB 9?

Yes. CELPIP’s score chart lists Levels 3 to 12 as CLB 3 to 12, and IRCC’s Express Entry language page lists CELPIP 9 in each skill as CLB 9. CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10 or more for IRCC points. On the CEFR, CELPIP 7 to 9 are B2.

Do I need CELPIP-General or CELPIP-General LS?

CELPIP-General for permanent residence: IRCC’s Express Entry page says you must take CELPIP-General. CELPIP-General LS, Listening and Speaking only, is for citizenship, where applicants aged 18 to 54 must show CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening. LS takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and costs CAD 199 plus tax in Canada.

What is the CELPIP exam fee in India in 2026?

celpip.ca’s India date table lists INR 15,500 per CELPIP-General sitting at every centre we checked on 21 October 2026, with no tax line. Some agents quote GST on top, so check the total on the payment screen before you pay. Cancelling at least seven days before the test refunds half the fee.

How much does CELPIP cost in Canada?

CAD 299 plus applicable taxes for CELPIP-General and CAD 199 plus taxes for CELPIP-General LS, on celpip.ca’s overview, residency and citizenship pages read on 21 October 2026. CELPIP’s June 2024 notice set CAD 290 from 1 October 2024, which is why older articles say 290. A transfer at least seven days ahead costs CAD 50 plus tax.

How many days do CELPIP results take?

Two to four business days, per celpip.ca’s results page and the July 2026 Guidebook; the overview page says three to four. Business days exclude weekends and holidays. You get an email when the scores are posted and download the official PDF score report from your account; paper copies have been discontinued. After five business days, contact CELPIP.

How long is a CELPIP score valid for Express Entry?

For IRCC, results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and again when you submit your permanent residence application, per IRCC’s language-testing page. CELPIP’s own pages differ: the format page says scores are valid for two years from the score report, while the results page says five years and lets you view them online for five. For Express Entry, IRCC’s two-year rule is the one that counts.

Is there an examiner in CELPIP Speaking?

No. You read each prompt on screen, prepare, and speak into a headset microphone; the recording is rated later by three to five trained raters working independently, per celpip.ca’s results page. Other candidates in the room may be speaking at the same time, which CELPIP calls a standard condition, so practise with background noise.

Will my Indian or Filipino accent lower my CELPIP Speaking score?

Not by itself. CELPIP’s podcast (episode 24) says having an accent does not automatically lower your Speaking score, and its speaking tips post says not to focus on your accent unless it stops you being understood. Raters weigh rhythm, pronunciation and intonation together with pauses, self-correction, grammar and sentence variety under Listenability.

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS for Canada?

Neither is officially easier; IRCC sets equivalent scores. For CLB 9 in Speaking, IRCC’s page asks for CELPIP 9, IELTS General Training 7.0 or PTE Core 84 to 88. The real difference is format: CELPIP Speaking is recorded on a computer in one sitting with everyday Canadian situations, while IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner.
