15 August Speech in Hindi and English: Line by Line for 2026

Plenty of students can write a good Independence Day speech in Hindi and then freeze when the school asks for it in English. The ideas are all there. The words are not. If that is your situation two days before 15 August, you do not need an English course. You need the same speech, in both languages, sitting side by side so you can see exactly which English line carries which Hindi thought.

That is what this guide is. Independence Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 15 August, India's 80th Independence Day, marking 79 completed years since 1947. Below you get a 1-minute and a 3-minute speech written in Hindi and in English, line by line, plus the hard English words broken into simple sounds, and a bilingual version for schools that want both languages from the same speaker.

Use it whichever way helps. Read only the Hindi. Read only the English. Or read the Hindi to understand and the English to deliver.

Key Takeaways

  • Translating word for word from Hindi produces awkward English. Translate the thought, not the words, and this guide shows you both versions of each line.
  • A 1-minute speech is about 130 words in English. A 3-minute speech is about 400. Hindi runs slightly longer for the same idea.
  • 2026 is the 80th Independence Day and marks 79 completed years. Both numbers are correct.
  • The four hardest English words in any Independence Day speech are independence, sacrifice, responsibility and freedom fighters. Practise those four aloud before anything else.
  • In a bilingual speech, switch language at paragraph breaks, never mid-sentence.

Why Does a Direct Hindi-to-English Translation Sound Wrong?

A word-for-word translation sounds wrong because Hindi and English build a sentence in different orders and lean on different verbs. Hindi puts the verb at the end and uses a small set of very flexible verbs. English puts the verb in the middle and prefers a specific verb for each action.

Take a line every student writes: हमें अपने स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों को कभी नहीं भूलना चाहिए। Translated word for word you get "We to our freedom fighters never forget should", which no one says. The natural English is "We should never forget our freedom fighters."

Or take आज़ादी बहुत बलिदान के बाद मिली है। Word for word this becomes "Freedom much sacrifice after got is." The natural English is "Our freedom came at a great cost."

The fix is to stop translating words and start translating the thought. Read the Hindi line, close the page, ask yourself what it means, and say that in the simplest English you know. Short English sentences almost always sound better than long ones, especially spoken aloud on a stage.

1-Minute 15 August Speech: Hindi and English Side by Side

About 130 words in English. Use this for Classes 5 to 8, or when the programme is running late.

Hindi English
आदरणीय प्रधानाचार्य जी, सम्मानित शिक्षकगण और मेरे प्यारे साथियों, आप सभी को सुप्रभात। Respected Principal, honourable teachers, and my dear friends, a very good morning to all of you.
आज हम भारत का 80वाँ स्वतंत्रता दिवस मना रहे हैं। Today we are celebrating India's 80th Independence Day.
15 अगस्त 1947 को हमारा देश आज़ाद हुआ था। On the 15th of August 1947, our country became free.
यह आज़ादी हमें आसानी से नहीं मिली। This freedom did not come to us easily.
हज़ारों लोगों ने अपना जीवन इस देश के लिए दे दिया। Thousands of people gave their lives for this country.
महात्मा गांधी, भगत सिंह, रानी लक्ष्मीबाई और सुभाष चंद्र बोस जैसे नाम हम कभी नहीं भूल सकते। Names like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai and Subhas Chandra Bose are names we can never forget.
आज़ादी का मतलब सिर्फ़ छुट्टी नहीं है। Independence does not simply mean a holiday.
इसका मतलब है ज़िम्मेदारी। It means responsibility.
हम विद्यार्थी हैं, और हमारा काम है अच्छे से पढ़ना और एक अच्छा इंसान बनना। We are students, and our work is to study well and to become good human beings.
यही हमारे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों को सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि होगी। That will be the truest tribute we can offer our freedom fighters.
आप सभी को स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ। जय हिन्द। A very happy Independence Day to all of you. Jai Hind.

3-Minute 15 August Speech: Hindi and English Side by Side

About 400 words in English. Suitable for Classes 9 to 12.

Hindi English
आदरणीय मुख्य अतिथि, आदरणीय प्रधानाचार्य जी, सम्मानित शिक्षकगण, अभिभावकगण और मेरे प्यारे मित्रों। Respected chief guest, respected Principal, honourable teachers, parents, and my dear friends.
आप सभी को स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ। A very happy Independence Day to all of you.
मैं __________, कक्षा ____ का विद्यार्थी हूँ, और आज मुझे आपके सामने बोलने का अवसर मिला है। I am __________ of Class ____, and today I have been given the chance to speak before you.
आज हम अपना 80वाँ स्वतंत्रता दिवस मना रहे हैं, और आज़ादी के 79 वर्ष पूरे हो चुके हैं। Today we are celebrating our 80th Independence Day, and 79 complete years of freedom.
लगभग दो सौ वर्षों तक हमारा देश पराधीन रहा। For nearly two hundred years our country was not its own.
हमारी ज़मीन हमारी थी, पर हमारा शासन हमारा नहीं था। The land was ours, but the rule over it was not.
फिर साधारण लोगों ने असाधारण काम किया। Then ordinary people did something extraordinary.
किसान, शिक्षक, वकील, छात्र, गृहिणियाँ, सब सड़कों पर उतर आए। Farmers, teachers, lawyers, students and housewives all came out onto the streets.
महात्मा गांधी ने बिना हथियार उठाए एक साम्राज्य को झुका दिया। Mahatma Gandhi made an empire yield without ever picking up a weapon.
भगत सिंह केवल तेईस वर्ष के थे जब उन्होंने अपना जीवन दे दिया। Bhagat Singh was only twenty-three years old when he gave his life.
रानी लक्ष्मीबाई ने अपने बच्चे को पीठ पर बाँधकर युद्ध लड़ा। Rani Lakshmibai fought a war with her child tied to her back.
इनमें से कोई भी हमसे बहुत अलग नहीं था। Not one of them was very different from us.
15 अगस्त 1947 की आधी रात को हमारा तिरंगा पहली बार आज़ाद आसमान में लहराया। At midnight on the 15th of August 1947, our tricolour flew for the first time in a free sky.
लेकिन एक सवाल हमें खुद से पूछना चाहिए। But there is a question we should ask ourselves.
क्या आज़ादी सिर्फ़ एक तारीख़ है, या एक ज़िम्मेदारी? Is freedom only a date, or is it a responsibility?
मेरे विचार से यह ज़िम्मेदारी है, और यह हर दिन निभानी पड़ती है। I believe it is a responsibility, and one that has to be carried every single day.
एक विद्यार्थी के लिए इसका मतलब है ईमानदारी से पढ़ाई करना। For a student, that means studying honestly.
इसका मतलब है अपने आसपास सफ़ाई रखना और नियमों का पालन करना। It means keeping our surroundings clean and following the rules.
इसका मतलब है किसी के साथ उसकी जाति, भाषा या धर्म के कारण भेदभाव न करना। It means never discriminating against anyone because of their caste, language or religion.
हमारे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों ने हमें एक आज़ाद देश दिया। Our freedom fighters gave us a free country.
अब यह हम पर है कि हम उसे कैसा देश बनाते हैं। What kind of country it becomes is now up to us.
आइए, आज हम यह संकल्प लें कि हम इस आज़ादी के योग्य बनेंगे। Let us make a promise today that we will be worthy of this freedom.
आप सभी को 80वें स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ। धन्यवाद। जय हिन्द। A very happy 80th Independence Day to all of you. Thank you. Jai Hind.

Which English Words Will Trip You Up, and How Do You Say Them?

These are the words Hindi-speaking students most often stumble on in an Independence Day speech. Say each one aloud five times before you rehearse the full speech.

Word Say it as Common mistake
independence in-di-PEN-dence stressing the first syllable
sacrifice SAC-ri-fice (ending like "fice" in office) saying "sacri-fise"
responsibility ri-spon-si-BIL-i-ty dropping the middle "si"
freedom FREE-dum "free-dome"
celebrating CEL-e-bray-ting "cele-brating" with a flat middle
tricolour TRY-cul-er "tri-colour" with a hard "col"
discriminate dis-CRIM-i-nate stress on the last syllable
generation jen-uh-RAY-shun "genera-shun"
tribute TRIB-yoot "tri-boot"
worthy WUR-thee "war-thy"

Two general habits help more than any word list. First, English stresses one syllable in every long word, and Hindi spreads stress more evenly, so deliberately push one syllable harder than the rest. Second, English words ending in a consonant need that consonant sounded; "freedom" ends with a clear m, not a trailing vowel.

If you want to hear whether you are actually getting these right, paste the English lines into Read Aloud practice on TalkDrill (free with an account), read them aloud, and it will score your pronunciation word by word. For a wider set of practice material, our read-aloud English passages for pronunciation work the same way.

How Do I Deliver a Bilingual Speech Without Sounding Confused?

Switch language at paragraph breaks, never inside a sentence. A speech that alternates every few words sounds unplanned, even when it is not.

The pattern most Indian schools prefer is a Hindi opening, an English body, and a Hindi close. It sounds warm at the start, carries the substance in the language the programme is being conducted in, and ends on a note the whole ground feels. Something like this:

Hindi: आदरणीय प्रधानाचार्य जी, सम्मानित शिक्षकगण और मेरे प्यारे साथियों, आप सभी को स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ।

English: Today we celebrate India's 80th Independence Day. For nearly two hundred years our country was not its own. Ordinary people, no older than the students on this ground, changed that. Freedom is not a date on a calendar. It is a responsibility we carry every day, and for a student that means studying honestly, following the rules, and treating everyone as an equal.

Hindi: हमारे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों ने हमें एक आज़ाद देश दिया। अब यह हम पर है कि हम उसे कैसा देश बनाते हैं। जय हिन्द।

Announce nothing when you switch. Do not say "and now in English". Just pause for one beat and continue. The pause does the work.

How Do I Practise This If My English Is Weak?

Work in this order. It is the fastest route from a Hindi draft to a confident English delivery.

  1. Read the Hindi column aloud once. You are checking that you actually agree with the ideas, not memorising.
  2. Read the English column aloud slowly, line by line, looking at the Hindi. Do not try to memorise yet. You are only linking each English line to a thought you already hold.
  3. Cover the Hindi and read only the English. Mark every line where you hesitate.
  4. Drill the marked lines ten times each. Usually there are four or five, not twenty.
  5. Read the full English speech aloud with a stopwatch. Aim for 1 minute or 3 minutes depending on the version.
  6. Do the whole thing standing up, twice. Sitting practice does not prepare your breathing.

Give this four sessions of ten minutes rather than one session of forty. Spaced repetition is well established in learning research, and the same principle applies to a speech: shorter sessions across several days beat one long cram the night before.

Giving the Speech in Your Own Language?

Most school programmes run at least partly in the state language, and a speech delivered in the language the audience thinks in almost always lands better. Each of these carries the same speech line by line, with the English meaning alongside:

  • 15 August speech in Marathi — १ मिनिट and ३ मिनिटांचे भाषण, with transliteration and a 10-line version.
  • 15 August speech in Kannada — ೧ ನಿಮಿಷ and ೩ ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಭಾಷಣ, including Kittur Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna.
  • 15 August speech in Tamil — 1 நிமிட and 3 நிமிட பேச்சு, including Bharathiyar and V. O. Chidambaranar.
  • 15 August speech in Telugu — 1 నిమిషం and 3 నిమిషాల ప్రసంగం, including Alluri Sitarama Raju, for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Your next school speech is probably for Bal Diwas, on Saturday, 14 November 2026. The बाल दिवस पर भाषण (Bal Diwas speech in Hindi) is set out line by line like this page and our Gandhi Jayanti speech in Hindi and English, with Roman letters and the English meaning. If you are speaking in English that day, the Children's Day speech in English has 1, 2 and 3-minute versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words is a 1-minute 15 August speech?

About 130 words in English at a comfortable stage pace of roughly 120 to 140 words per minute. The same speech in Hindi usually runs a little longer, closer to 150 words, because Hindi uses more syllables for the same idea. Time yourself rather than counting words.

Can I write my speech in Hindi and read it in English on stage?

Yes, and it is a sensible way to work if Hindi is where you think. Draft in Hindi, translate thought by thought rather than word by word using the tables above, then rehearse only the English version aloud. What matters is that the English you finally deliver is simple and correct, not how you arrived at it.

Is it 79th or 80th Independence Day in 2026?

2026 is the 80th Independence Day and it marks 79 completed years of freedom. The first Independence Day was 15 August 1947, so counting the celebrations gives 80 while counting completed years gives 79. Our Independence Day 2026 guide works through it in detail.

Should I say "Jai Hind" at the end?

It is the standard close for an Independence Day speech in India and it always lands well. Say it clearly and stop. Do not add anything after it, and do not trail off; "Jai Hind" is the last thing the audience should hear.

What if I forget a line in the middle of the speech?

Move to the next idea rather than trying to retrieve the exact sentence. Because you learned this speech as thoughts rather than as memorised words, you can rejoin at any line. Pausing for two seconds and continuing reads as composure. Standing frozen while you hunt for one word does not.

Where can I find a simpler version for a younger child?

Our Independence Day speech for kids has 8-line and 10-line versions written for Classes 1 to 5, with the harder words removed. For older students who want more length options, the Independence Day speech in English guide has 1, 2 and 3-minute versions.

Bringing It Together

Speaking on 15 August in a language you are still building confidence in is not a vocabulary problem. It is a matching problem. You already have the thoughts in Hindi; you just need to see which English sentence carries each one, and then say those sentences out loud enough times that your mouth stops hesitating.

Pick the 1-minute or the 3-minute version above, read the Hindi column once to settle the ideas, then work through the English column line by line. Drill the four or five lines that catch you. Practise standing, with a stopwatch, across a few short sessions rather than one long one.

If you are also anchoring the programme, the Independence Day anchoring script has bilingual linking lines, and the welcome speech and vote of thanks guide covers the two short speeches that open and close the morning.

आप सभी को स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ। Jai Hind.
