15 August Speech in Marathi and English 2026 (Line by Line Bhashan)
Here is a ready 15 August speech in Marathi with the English meaning of every line — a 1-minute version, a 3-minute version and a 10-line version, plus Roman transliteration if you are more comfortable reading Marathi in English letters.
If your school programme runs in Marathi, this is written to be spoken, not read: short sentences, ordinary words, and nothing a Class 5 student would stumble over. Copy the length that matches your slot and change the last paragraph to mention your own school.
Before you start: the numbers to get right
- Date: 15 August 2026, a Saturday
- Which Independence Day: the 80th (८० वा स्वातंत्र्य दिन)
- Years of freedom completed: 79 (७९ वर्षे)
- What happens to the flag: it is hoisted — tied low and pulled up — not unfurled
Saying "79th Independence Day" or "80 years of freedom" is the most common mistake in school speeches. Both numbers below are correct as written.
1-minute speech in Marathi (१ मिनिट भाषण)
About 120 words. This is the version most students need — a school programme rarely gives a student speaker more than a minute.

What it means in English
Honourable Principal, respected teachers and my dear friends,
Today is 15 August — our Independence Day. Warm wishes to all of you on this day.
Today we are celebrating India's 80th Independence Day. Our country became free in 1947, and today we complete 79 years of freedom.
This freedom did not come to us easily. Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai and countless brave people like them gave everything they had for the country. It is because of their sacrifice that we breathe freely today.
We cannot repay that debt, but we can certainly complete their dream. Studying with full attention, living honestly, and holding our country in respect — that is the truest tribute we can offer them.
Jai Hind! Victory to Mother India!

3-minute speech in Marathi (३ मिनिटांचे भाषण)
About 350 words. Use this if you are speaking on behalf of your class or house, or if the programme has given you a longer slot.
What the 3-minute speech means in English
Honourable Principal, respected teachers, my fellow students and all the distinguished guests present,
Today is 15 August. Warm wishes to all of you on India's 80th Independence Day.
This morning we hoisted the tricolour. The pride that fills your heart watching it rise is hard to put into words. But today it is just as important to remember what that flag cost.
On 15 August 1947 our country became free. Today we complete 79 years of freedom. But that date did not fall out of the sky. Behind it lies nearly two hundred years of struggle.
Mahatma Gandhi brought an entire country together on the path of non-violence. Lokmanya Tilak declared, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it." Bhagat Singh walked to the gallows smiling at just twenty-three. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi fought to her last breath. If we did not know a single one of these names today, we could not be standing here.
Friends, winning freedom was hard; keeping it and giving it meaning is our work. And that work does not happen through grand gestures — it happens through small daily ones.
Reaching school on time. Studying with attention. Not lying. Keeping our surroundings clean. Respecting another person's language and religion. Running to help when someone is in difficulty. All of it sounds small, but a country is built out of exactly these things.
We can never repay our martyrs. But we can carry their dream forward — an India where every child can study, everyone can find work, and no one has to live in fear.
So let us make one resolution today. Let us think about what we can give our country. Because this country is ours, and the responsibility of building it is ours too.
With that, I end my speech. Thank you!
Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra! Victory to Mother India!

How to deliver it so it does not sound read
The speech above is the easy part. What decides how it lands is the ninety seconds of delivery, and almost all of that comes down to four habits:
- Pause at every full stop, and count one in your head. Nervous speakers run sentences together. A held pause is the single biggest difference between a child reciting and a child speaking.
- Look up on the last three words of each paragraph. You do not need to memorise the whole speech — just know the ending of each block well enough to lift your eyes for it.
- Say the greeting slower than feels natural. The first line sets your pace for the whole speech. If you rush it, you will rush everything.
- End loud. "Jai Hind" should be the loudest thing you say. Most speeches fade out at exactly the moment they should land.
Rehearse it out loud at least three times — not in your head. Reading silently trains your eyes, not your mouth, and on stage it is your mouth that has to do the work. If you can, record yourself once on a phone and listen back. Almost everyone is surprised by how fast they are going.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give this speech in Marathi if my school is English-medium?
Usually yes, and it often lands better. Most schools in Maharashtra run at least part of the 15 August programme in Marathi, and a speech delivered in the language the audience thinks in gets a warmer response than a stiff English one. Ask your class teacher which slot is which before you decide.
Is 15 August 2026 the 79th or the 80th Independence Day?
The 80th. It marks 79 completed years, because 15 August 1947 was itself the 1st Independence Day. Both "८० वा स्वातंत्र्य दिन" and "स्वातंत्र्याची ७९ वर्षे" are correct. Avoid "७९ वा स्वातंत्र्य दिन".
How do I make this speech sound like mine and not a copy?
Add one sentence about your own school, town or family — the name of your school, something your grandparents told you, a place near you connected to the freedom movement. It takes ten seconds to write and it is the whole difference between a recital and a speech.
How many words is a 1-minute Marathi speech?
About 110 to 130 words spoken at a comfortable pace. Marathi runs slightly slower than English out loud, so if you have timed an English speech at 150 words per minute, cut it by roughly a fifth for Marathi.
What should I say at the very end?
"जय हिंद!" is the standard close, and "भारत माता की जय!" after it is common in school programmes. In Maharashtra "जय महाराष्ट्र!" is often added between the two. Say whichever your school usually says, and say it loudly.
The rest of the 15 August programme
A speech is usually one item on a longer morning. The rest of it is written out here:
- Independence Day speech in English — the 1-minute and 3-minute English versions, a fill-in template and a 25-line phrase bank.
- 15 August speech in Hindi and English — the same bilingual treatment, line by line, if your programme runs in Hindi.
- Anchoring script for the full programme — flag hoisting, anthem, chief guest, cultural items and closing, with fill-in lines for the compere.
- Welcome speech and vote of thanks — 2-minute and 30-second versions, and whom to thank in what order.
- Speeches for Class 1 to 5 — 8-line and 15-line versions for younger speakers.
- Independence Day 2026: date, day and why it is the 80th — worth checking before you say a number on stage.
