Gandhi Jayanti Speech in Hindi and English 2026 (Line by Line Bhashan)
Here is a ready Gandhi Jayanti speech in Hindi with the English meaning of every line — a 1-minute version, a 3-minute version and a 10-line version, plus Roman transliteration if you find Hindi easier to read in English letters.
It is written to be spoken, not read: short sentences, ordinary words, and the years written out the way you actually say them. Take the length that fits your slot. If you are a girl, change चाहता हूँ to चाहती हूँ in the 3-minute version — it is the only line that changes.

1-minute speech in Hindi
About 135 words — just over a minute at a calm pace. If your slot is strictly one minute, drop the line about Shastri ji.
The same speech in Roman letters (transliteration)
Aadaraniya Pradhanacharya ji, sammanit shikshakgan aur mere priya saathiyon,
Aap sabhi ko Gandhi Jayanti ki hardik shubhkaamnaayein!
Aaj 2 October hai — Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi ka janmdin. Unka janm 2 October 1869 ko Gujarat ke Porbandar mein hua tha. Pyaar se hum unhein 'Bapu' kehte hain. Aaj hi hamare desh ke doosre Pradhanmantri Lal Bahadur Shastri ji ka bhi janmdin hai.
Bapu ne hamein sikhaya ki sabse badi taaqat hathiyaar mein nahin, sach mein hoti hai. Satya aur ahinsa ke raaste par chalkar unhone angrezi raaj ko jhuka diya. 1930 mein unhone Dandi tak paidal yaatra ki aur samudra kinaare mutthi bhar namak uthaya — aur poora desh unke saath khada ho gaya.
Bapu ko yaad karne ka sabse achchha tareeqa phool chadhana nahin, balki sach bolna hai — tab bhi, jab jhooth bolna aasaan ho.
Dhanyavaad! Jai Hind!
What it means in English
Respected Principal, honoured teachers and my dear friends,
Warm wishes to all of you on Gandhi Jayanti!
Today is 2 October — the birthday of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. He was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. We lovingly call him "Bapu". Today is also the birthday of our country's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Bapu taught us that the greatest strength lies not in weapons but in truth. Walking the path of truth and non-violence, he made British rule bend. In 1930 he walked to Dandi and picked up a handful of salt by the sea — and the whole country stood with him.
The best way to remember Bapu is not to offer flowers but to tell the truth — even when a lie would be easier.
Thank you! Jai Hind!
3-minute speech in Hindi
About 360 words. Use this if you are speaking for your class or house, or if the programme has given you a longer slot.

What the 3-minute speech means in English
Respected Principal, honoured teachers, the guests present here and my dear friends,
Warm wishes to all of you on Gandhi Jayanti!
Today is 2 October. One hundred and fifty-seven years ago, on 2 October 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born at Porbandar in Gujarat. That same child grew up to become "Bapu" to the whole country.
But today I want to tell you about the Gandhi we know less well. As a child he was very shy, and an average student. When he stood up to argue in court for the first time as a lawyer, not one word came out, and he quietly sat down. If you have ever been scared on a stage, remember — so was Bapu.
In 1893 he went to South Africa. There he was put off a train carriage only because of the colour of his skin. He decided that he would not bear injustice in silence — but he would not answer it with violence either. From that thought came "satyagraha": holding firmly to the truth.
Back in India, he took the same path. In 1917 he fought for the rights of the indigo farmers of Champaran in Bihar, and won. In 1930 he walked for twenty-four days from the Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. There, by making salt on the seashore, he broke the British salt law. In 1942 he told the British to "Quit India", and gave the country a mantra — "Do or die".
The country became free on 15 August 1947. But that day Bapu was not at the celebrations in Delhi. He was in Bengal, trying to stop the riots. On 30 January 1948 he was assassinated.
Today is also the birthday of our country's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, who gave us the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan".
Friends, when someone asked Bapu for a message, he said: "My life is my message." We cannot all walk to Dandi. But we can tell the truth, keep the places around us clean, and say what we believe without hurting anyone. That will be our true tribute to Bapu.
Thank you! Jai Hind!

How to say the years out loud
This is where Hindi speeches stumble. Written digits are easy to read and hard to say, so practise these until they come out without a pause:

How to deliver it so it does not sound read
A Gandhi Jayanti speech has a trap in it: the subject is so familiar that it is easy to recite a list of dates nobody hears. Four habits fix that:
- Pick one incident and tell it properly. Champaran, or the Salt March, or the fact that he spun his own cloth. One story told with detail beats six facts listed flat.
- Slow down on the numbers. Dates and distances are where an audience loses the thread. Say "nineteen thirty" and then pause, rather than running it into the next clause.
- Look up on the last three words of each paragraph. You do not need it memorised — just know each ending well enough to lift your eyes for it.
- Do not end on a quotation. Half the school will end on the same one. End on your own sentence about why any of it still matters.
Rehearse it out loud at least three times, not in your head. Reading silently trains your eyes; on stage it is your mouth doing the work. Record yourself once on a phone and listen back — almost everyone is surprised by how fast they are going.
If the same assembly also has a thought of the day, our thought of the day in Hindi and English has more than seventy suvichar, most with their meaning written out, and the thirty-second script that goes around them.
Your next school speech is probably for Bal Diwas, on Saturday, 14 November 2026. (Bal Diwas speech in Hindi) is set out in this same line-by-line format, with Roman letters and the English meaning. If you are speaking in English that day, the Children's Day speech in English has 1, 2 and 3-minute versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give this speech in Hindi if my school is English-medium?
Usually yes. Many schools run at least part of the 2 October function in Hindi, and the audience often follows it more easily than a stiff English version. Ask your class teacher which slot is which.
Should I mention Lal Bahadur Shastri in a Gandhi Jayanti speech?
One line is enough, and it is a good addition — he was born on the same date, 2 October 1904, and 2026 is his 122nd birth anniversary. Do not let him take over the speech unless you have been asked to speak about both.
Which Gandhi quotation is safe to use in Hindi?
(My life is my message) is his own. Be careful with the Hindi versions of "Be the change you wish to see in the world" — that line is popularly attributed to him but is not traceable to his writings.
How many words is a 1-minute Hindi speech?
About 100 to 120 words at a comfortable pace. Hindi runs slightly slower out loud than English, so a speech timed at 150 English words a minute needs cutting by roughly a fifth.
What does "Jayanti" mean?
Birth anniversary. Gandhi Jayanti is the anniversary of Gandhi's birth, the same way Shastri Jayanti on the same day is his.
