Teachers' Day Speech in Telugu and English: Line by Line for 2026

You can already say exactly what you feel about your teachers in Telugu. Then the school asks for the speech in English, and the same thoughts refuse to come out. That is not a vocabulary problem. It is a matching problem: the thought exists, the English sentence that carries it does not. What fixes it is the two languages sitting side by side, in the same order, on the same page.

That is what this guide is. Teachers' Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 5 September — the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born 5 September 1888, and India's 65th Teachers' Day since the observance began in 1962.

Below you get a 1-minute and a 3-minute Teachers' Day speech written in Telugu and in English, line by line, in the same order. After that: the hard English words broken into simple sounds, and a bilingual version for a programme where you have to use both languages from the same microphone.

Use it whichever way helps. Read only the Telugu. Read only the English. Or read the Telugu to settle the meaning in your head and the English to deliver on stage.

Key Takeaways

  • Telugu puts the verb at the end of a sentence and English puts it in the middle, so word-for-word translation lands the English verb in the wrong place. Translate the thought, not the words.
  • The 1-minute speech below is 133 words in English; the 3-minute one is 388 words. Time yourself against those instead of trusting the labels.
  • 5 September 2026 is a Saturday, the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Radhakrishnan and India's 65th Teachers' Day.
  • Drill four words before you rehearse anything else — anniversary, philosopher, patience and celebrating. The table below breaks each into beats and marks which beat to push.
  • In a bilingual speech, change language at a paragraph break, never inside a sentence — and never announce the switch.

Why Does a Word-for-Word Telugu Translation Sound Wrong in English?

Because the two languages build a sentence in opposite directions. Telugu puts the verb at the very end, marks who-did-what-to-whom with endings glued onto the noun (కు, కి, ను, తో), and has no words for a, an or the. English puts the verb in the middle, uses separate little words like to and for, and insists on those articles.

So the moment you translate one word at a time, the English comes out in Telugu order. The "word for word" rows below are what that looks like on paper.

Take a line you might genuinely write:

మా గురువులకు నేను ఎప్పటికీ రుణపడి ఉంటాను.

Word for word: "Our teachers-to I ever indebted having-become will be."

Natural English: "I will always be grateful to our teachers."

Notice what happened. The verb moved forward, "teachers-to" became "to our teachers", and the heavy phrase రుణపడి ఉంటాను collapsed into one ordinary English word, grateful. Shorter, not longer.

Here is a second one, with a construction Telugu uses constantly:

మా ఉపాధ్యాయులు మాకు పాఠాలు మాత్రమే కాదు, మంచి నడవడిక కూడా నేర్పారు.

Word for word: "Our teachers to us lessons only not, good conduct also taught."

Natural English: "Our teachers taught us more than our lessons. They taught us how to behave."

The మాత్రమే కాదు… కూడా frame is perfectly good Telugu and becomes "only not… also" in English, which is nothing. English would rather have two short sentences than one balanced pair.

That is the whole method: read the Telugu line, look away from the page, ask yourself what it actually means, and say that in the plainest English you own. Keep the English sentences short — the English column in both tables below is written in one- and two-clause sentences for exactly that reason.

What Is the 1-Minute Teachers' Day Speech in Telugu and English?

133 words in English across 11 lines, which lands near sixty seconds at a calm assembly pace. Good for Classes 5 to 8, or for a class programme running behind schedule.

తెలుగు (Telugu) English
గౌరవనీయులైన ప్రధానోపాధ్యాయుల వారికి, ఆదరణీయులైన ఉపాధ్యాయులకు, నా ప్రియమైన మిత్రులకు — అందరికీ శుభోదయం. Respected Principal, dear teachers, and my dear friends — a very good morning to all of you.
ఈ రోజు సెప్టెంబర్ 5, ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవం. Today is the 5th of September, Teachers' Day.
ఈ రోజు డాక్టర్ సర్వేపల్లి రాధాకృష్ణన్ గారి జయంతి. Today is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
ఆయన మన దేశానికి మొదటి ఉపరాష్ట్రపతి, రెండవ రాష్ట్రపతి. కానీ అన్నిటికంటే ముందు ఆయన ఒక ఉపాధ్యాయుడు. He was India's first Vice-President and our second President. But before all of that, he was a teacher.
తన పుట్టినరోజును ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవంగా జరుపుకోమని ఆయన కోరారని చెబుతారు. As the story is widely told, he asked for his birthday to be kept as Teachers' Day instead.
మా ఉపాధ్యాయులు మాకు పాఠాల కంటే ఎక్కువే ఇచ్చారు. Our teachers have given us much more than lessons.
మేము తప్పు చేసినప్పుడు వాళ్ళు ఓర్పుగా మళ్ళీ చెప్పారు. When we got things wrong, they explained again, patiently.
మా మీద మాకంటే ఎక్కువ నమ్మకం ఉంచారు. They believed in us more than we believed in ourselves.
మా తరగతి అందరి తరపున, మా గురువులకు హృదయపూర్వక ధన్యవాదాలు. On behalf of my whole class, a heartfelt thank you to our teachers.
మీరు నేర్పిన మంచి విషయాలను మేము ఎప్పటికీ మరచిపోము. We will never forget the good things you have taught us.
అందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు. ధన్యవాదాలు. A very happy Teachers' Day to all of you. Thank you.

Swap one line for something of your own. Line seven is the easiest place to do it — replace "when we got things wrong, they explained again" with the actual moment a teacher explained something to you twice.

What Is the 3-Minute Teachers' Day Speech in Telugu and English?

388 words in English across 25 lines, close to three minutes spoken at an unhurried pace. Suitable for a full assembly slot, Classes 9 to 12.

తెలుగు (Telugu) English
గౌరవనీయులైన ముఖ్య అతిథికి, గౌరవనీయులైన ప్రధానోపాధ్యాయుల వారికి, ఆదరణీయులైన ఉపాధ్యాయులకు, తల్లిదండ్రులకు, నా ప్రియమైన మిత్రులకు — అందరికీ నమస్కారం. Respected chief guest, respected Principal, honourable teachers, parents, and my dear friends — my greetings to all of you.
అందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు. A very happy Teachers' Day to every one of you.
నా పేరు __________. నేను ____ వ తరగతి చదువుతున్నాను. ఈ రోజు మీ ముందు మాట్లాడే అవకాశం నాకు దొరికింది. My name is __________ and I study in Class ____. Today I have been given the chance to speak in front of you.
ప్రతి సంవత్సరం సెప్టెంబర్ 5న మనం ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవం జరుపుకుంటాం. Every year, on the 5th of September, we celebrate Teachers' Day.
ఇది డాక్టర్ సర్వేపల్లి రాధాకృష్ణన్ గారి జయంతి. ఆయన 1888 సెప్టెంబర్ 5న జన్మించారు. This is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on the 5th of September, 1888.
ఆయన మన దేశానికి మొదటి ఉపరాష్ట్రపతి అయ్యారు, ఆ తరువాత రెండవ రాష్ట్రపతి అయ్యారు. He became India's first Vice-President, and after that our second President.
ఆయన ఒక గొప్ప తత్వవేత్త. కానీ ప్రజాజీవితంలోకి రాకముందు ఆయన ఒక ఉపాధ్యాయుడు. He was a great philosopher. But before he entered public life, he was a teacher.
తన పుట్టినరోజు జరుపుకుంటామని విద్యార్థులు అడిగినప్పుడు, ఆ రోజును ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవంగా జరుపుకోమని ఆయన కోరారని చెబుతారు. The widely told account is that when his students asked to celebrate his birthday, he asked instead that the day be kept for all teachers.
1962 నుంచి మన దేశం ఈ రోజును జరుపుకుంటోంది. ఈ సంవత్సరం మనం 65వ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవాన్ని జరుపుకుంటున్నాం. India has observed this day since 1962. This year we are celebrating the 65th Teachers' Day.
మన సంస్కృతిలో "ఆచార్య దేవో భవ" అని చెబుతారు — గురువును దైవంతో సమానంగా చూడాలని. In our culture we say "Acharya Devo Bhava" — that a teacher is to be regarded as the divine.
ఆ మాట అర్థం నాకు ఒక రోజు నిజంగా తెలిసివచ్చింది. There was one day on which I finally understood what that line means.
నాకు ఒక పాఠం ఎంత చెప్పినా అర్థం కాలేదు. తరగతి అంతా ముందుకు వెళ్ళిపోయింది. There was a lesson I could not follow, however many times it was explained. The rest of the class had moved ahead.
మా ఉపాధ్యాయురాలు నన్ను తిట్టలేదు. విరామ సమయంలో నా పక్కన కూర్చుని మొదటి నుంచి మళ్ళీ చెప్పారు. My teacher did not scold me. She sat beside me during the break and explained it again from the very beginning.
ఆ రోజు నేను ఆ పాఠం మాత్రమే నేర్చుకోలేదు. ఇక్కడ ఎవరూ నన్ను వదిలేయరు అని కూడా నేర్చుకున్నాను. That day I did not only learn the lesson. I learnt that in this school, nobody gives up on me.
మా ఉపాధ్యాయులు ప్రతిరోజూ ఇదే చేస్తారు. Our teachers do this every single day.
వాళ్ళు పాఠశాలకు ముందుగా వస్తారు, ఇంటికి ఆలస్యంగా వెళ్తారు. They reach school early and they go home late.
మా నోట్ పుస్తకాలను ఇంటికి తీసుకువెళ్ళి, దిద్ది, మరుసటి రోజు తిరిగి ఇస్తారు. They carry our notebooks home, correct them, and hand them back the next day.
మా చిన్న విజయాలకు మాకంటే ఎక్కువగా సంతోషిస్తారు. They are happier about our small wins than we are ourselves.
గురువులారా, మేము ఇవన్నీ బయటకు చెప్పకపోవచ్చు. కానీ మేము గమనిస్తున్నాం. Teachers, we may not say all of this out loud. But we do notice.
మీ ఓర్పును గమనిస్తున్నాం. కష్టమైన పాఠాన్ని మీరు సులభం చేసే విధానాన్ని గమనిస్తున్నాం. We notice your patience. We notice the way you make a difficult lesson feel simple.
మీరు మా మార్కులను మాత్రమే కాదు, మా వ్యక్తిత్వాన్ని కూడా తీర్చిదిద్దుతున్నారని మాకు తెలుసు. We know that you are shaping not only our marks, but the kind of people we are becoming.
ఈ పాఠశాలలోని ప్రతి విద్యార్థి తరపున నేను ఒక చిన్న మాట చెప్పాలనుకుంటున్నాను — ధన్యవాదాలు. On behalf of every student in this school, I want to say one small thing — thank you.
మీ సమయానికి, మీ ఓర్పుకు, మా మీద మీరు ఉంచిన నమ్మకానికి ధన్యవాదాలు. Thank you for your time, for your patience, and for the faith you have placed in us.
మిమ్మల్ని గర్వపడేలా చేస్తామని ఈ రోజు మాట ఇస్తున్నాం. Today we make you a promise: we will make you proud.
మా ఉపాధ్యాయులందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు. ధన్యవాదాలు. A very happy Teachers' Day to all our teachers. Thank you.

Rows 11 to 14 are the story in the middle, and they are a placeholder. Replace them with your own — the subject, what the teacher did, and what you took away. Keep it to two or three sentences; each row here is one line of a table, not a paragraph.

If you want a longer English-only version to lift extra lines from, the Teachers' Day speech in English guide has a fill-in template and a phrase bank you can mix into the English column above.

Which Lines Should I Swap for My Own?

Both speeches above are written to be edited, not recited as they stand. These are the lines worth replacing, already paired in Telugu and English so you can drop either column straight into either speech. The blanks take a name, a class or a subject.

Where it goes తెలుగు (Telugu) English
Naming the teacher who changed a subject for you __________ సార్ వల్లనే నాకు __________ సబ్జెక్ట్ అంటే ఇష్టం కలిగింది. __________ sir is the reason I like __________ today.
A sentence a teacher said that stayed with you __________ మేడమ్ ఒకసారి చెప్పిన మాట నాకు ఇప్పటికీ గుర్తుంది. Something __________ ma'am said once has stayed with me ever since.
Thanking your own class teacher by name మా తరగతి ఉపాధ్యాయురాలు __________ మేడమ్ గారికి ప్రత్యేక ధన్యవాదాలు. A special thank you to our class teacher, __________ ma'am.
Naming the school __________ పాఠశాలలో చదవడం మా అదృష్టం. We are lucky to be studying at __________ School.
A teacher who is retiring or leaving __________ సార్ ఈ సంవత్సరం మా నుంచి వెళ్తున్నారు. ఆయనకు మా హృదయపూర్వక కృతజ్ఞతలు. __________ sir is leaving us this year. Our heartfelt thanks go with him.
A closing promise మీరు నేర్పిన దానికి తగినట్టుగా నడుచుకుంటామని మాట ఇస్తున్నాం. We promise to live up to what you have taught us.

Use one or two of these, not all six. Each one you add pushes something else out, so decide first which existing row it is replacing — and check your total against the word counts at the top of each speech.

Which English Words Are Hardest Here, and How Do You Say Them?

Four words are worth drilling before you rehearse the full thing: anniversary and philosopher because of where the stress sits, patience and celebrating for the unstressed beat that is easy to get wrong. Say each one aloud five times slowly, then five times at speaking speed.

Word Break it into Push hardest on Watch out for
anniversary a-ni-VER-sa-ry VER flattening it to "anni-varsary" — there are five beats, not four
philosopher fi-LO-so-fer LO the ph is an f, and the ending is "-fer", not "-far"
patience PAY-shuns PAY it is two beats, not three — do not add a vowel after the s
celebrating CEL-uh-bray-ting CEL the second beat is a soft "uh", not a clear "e"

Seven more words that appear in the speeches above, in one line each:

Word Break it into
September sep-TEM-ber
honourable ON-ur-uh-bul
principal PRIN-si-pul
patiently PAY-shunt-lee
difficult DIF-i-kult
behalf bi-HAAF
promise PRO-mis

Two habits carry further than any word list.

Push one syllable, not all of them. Telugu gives each syllable roughly even weight. English does not: in a long English word, one syllable is louder and longer than the rest and the others get squeezed. In anniversary, four of the five beats are quiet and VER carries the word.

Let the last consonant land. Telugu syllables usually end in a vowel. English words like patience, notice and promise end on a consonant sound, so stop cleanly on it rather than letting a small vowel slip in behind it. Promise ends in a hissed s, not "promis-u".

To hear where you are actually landing rather than guessing, paste the English column into TalkDrill's Read Aloud practice (free with an account), read it aloud, and it scores your pronunciation word by word. Our read-aloud English passages for pronunciation give you more material once the speech is done.

How Do I Give a Bilingual Telugu and English Speech Without Sounding Confused?

Change language at a paragraph break, never inside a sentence, and never announce the change. Decide the two switch points in advance and mark them on your paper, so each language runs as a whole block and you never have to change track mid-sentence.

The shape below is a Telugu opening, an English body, and a Telugu close. The greeting and the thank-you stay in Telugu, the substance sits in English, and there are exactly two switch points to remember. It runs to about 88 words of English plus the two Telugu blocks:

తెలుగు: గౌరవనీయులైన ప్రధానోపాధ్యాయుల వారికి, ఆదరణీయులైన ఉపాధ్యాయులకు, నా ప్రియమైన మిత్రులకు — అందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు.

(Respected Principal, dear teachers, my dear friends — a very happy Teachers' Day to all of you.)

English: Today, the 5th of September, is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan — a philosopher, our first Vice-President, our second President, and a teacher before all of it. When his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, the story is widely told that he asked for the day to be kept for teachers instead. Our teachers do the same thing in a smaller way every morning. They come in early, they explain a lesson a second time without being asked, and they say nothing about it afterwards.

తెలుగు: మీరు నేర్పిన పాఠాలు మేము మరచిపోవచ్చు. కానీ మీరు మాకు ఇచ్చిన ధైర్యాన్ని ఎప్పటికీ మరచిపోము. అందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు. ధన్యవాదాలు.

(We may forget the lessons you taught us. But we will never forget the courage you gave us. A very happy Teachers' Day to all of you. Thank you.)

Say nothing at the switch. No "and now in English". Pause for one beat and carry on.

If you are also compering the programme, the linking lines between items are a different job from the speech. The Teachers' Day anchoring script covers those.

How Do I Practise This If My English Is Weak?

Work in this order. It is the shortest route from a Telugu draft to a delivery you are not scared of.

  1. Read the Telugu column aloud, once. You are checking that you agree with the ideas, not memorising anything yet.
  2. Read the English column slowly, line by line, with the Telugu still in view. You are only linking each English sentence to a thought you already hold.
  3. Cover the Telugu column and read only the English. Put a pencil mark next to every line where you hesitate.
  4. Drill the marked lines ten times each. Work only on the lines you marked, not the whole speech again.
  5. Read the full English speech with a stopwatch. One minute or three, depending on which version you picked.
  6. Do the whole thing standing, twice. Standing changes how you breathe and where your hands go, so do the last two runs on your feet rather than at a desk.

Split this across a few short sessions — say ten minutes a day for four days — rather than one long sitting the night before.

The times below assume a stage pace of 120 to 140 words a minute. Your own pace is what actually decides it, so check with a stopwatch.

Version English words Rough time Good for
1-minute 133 57–66 seconds Classes 5–8, class programme
3-minute 388 2 min 45 – 3 min 15 Classes 9–12, full assembly
Bilingual 88 English, plus two Telugu blocks about 90 seconds Programmes using both languages

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words is a 1-minute Teachers' Day speech in English?

The one on this page is 133 words, which lands near a minute if you read at 120 to 140 words a minute. Time yourself with a stopwatch rather than trusting the word count — your own speaking pace is what decides it. Run it twice and take the slower of the two times as your real one.

Can I write my speech in Telugu and deliver it in English?

Yes, and it is a sensible way to work if Telugu is where you think. Draft it in Telugu, then translate thought by thought rather than word by word using the tables above, and rehearse only the English version aloud. How you arrived at the English does not matter. Whether it is simple, correct and easy to say does.

Which Teachers' Day is 2026, and whose birthday is it?

5 September 2026 is a Saturday. It is the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5 September 1888, and it is India's 65th Teachers' Day, counting from 1962 when the observance began. Because it falls on a Saturday, check with your school which day the programme is actually being held.

Should I end with "ధన్యవాదాలు" or "Thank you"?

Either works, and both together works too — "ధన్యవాదాలు. Thank you." is a clean close for a bilingual audience. What matters more is that you stop after it. Say the last word clearly, hold still for a second, and walk back. Do not trail off, and do not add anything once the thank-you is out.

What if I forget a line in the middle of the speech?

Move to the next idea instead of hunting for the exact sentence. Because you learnt this speech as a sequence of thoughts rather than as memorised words, you can rejoin at any row of the table. Pause for two seconds, pick up the next idea, and carry on. Before you go up, mark the first three words of every row on your paper — that gives you a next line to jump to from anywhere in the speech.

Where can I find a shorter version, or one in Hindi?

For younger children there is a Teachers' Day speech for kids with short versions written for Classes 1 to 5. If your school runs the programme in Hindi, the Teachers' Day speech in Hindi and English guide is built exactly like this one, line by line.

Bringing It Together

Speaking on 5 September in a language you are still building is not really a language problem. It is a matching problem. The thoughts are already there in Telugu — you just need to see which English sentence carries each one, and then say those sentences out loud enough times that your mouth stops hesitating over them.

Pick the 1-minute or the 3-minute version above. Read the Telugu column once to settle the meaning, then work down the English column line by line. Replace the story in the middle with something that actually happened to you, and swap in a line or two from the personalisation table. Drill the four words, mark the lines that catch you, and practise standing up with a stopwatch across a few short sessions.

For the wider picture of the day — its history, programme ideas and what else your school might ask you for — see the Teachers' Day 2026 guide.

Then do the part that cannot be done on paper: say it out loud. Paste your English lines into TalkDrill's Read Aloud practice (free with an account), read them out, and see where the words are landing before you are standing in front of the whole school.

అందరికీ ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవ శుభాకాంక్షలు. ధన్యవాదాలు.
