Teachers' Day 2026: Date, Day and Why It Is 5 September
Teachers' Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 5 September 2026. India marks it on that date every year because it is the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born 5 September 1888 — and because he asked for it himself.
Quick answers
- Date: 5 September 2026
- Day of the week: Saturday
- Whose birthday: Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born 5 September 1888
- Which birth anniversary: his 138th
- Observed as Teachers' Day since: 1962
- Is it a public holiday: no — schools stay open, and that is the point
- World Teachers' Day: a different day, 5 October
Why is Teachers' Day celebrated on 5 September?
Because of something Radhakrishnan said when he was asked about his own birthday.
He had become President of India in 1962, and some of his students and admirers wanted to celebrate 5 September as his birthday. He suggested instead that they observe it as Teachers' Day — that he would be prouder to see the day given to the profession than to himself. It has been marked that way ever since.
The reason the suggestion carried weight is that he was a teacher long before he was a politician, and by most accounts a genuinely great one. He was not a public figure who had once taught; he was a career academic who ended up as head of state.
Who was Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?
A philosopher and teacher, born on 5 September 1888 at Thiruttani, in what is now Tamil Nadu.
He taught philosophy at Mysore and Calcutta, and held the Spalding Professorship of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford — an unusual thing for an Indian academic in that period. His writing set out to explain Indian philosophy to readers who had only encountered it second-hand.
He then served as India's first Vice-President from 1952 to 1962, and as its second President from 1962 to 1967. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
If you mention him in a speech, the useful thing to say is not the list of posts — it is that a teacher became President, and that when offered a birthday he gave it back to teachers. That is a line an audience feels.

Is Teachers' Day a holiday in India?
No. It is not a gazetted holiday, and schools are open.
That is deliberate rather than an oversight — the day is celebrated in school, not away from it. In most schools the timetable is set aside for a function, and in many, senior students take over the junior classes for part of the day and teach, while the teachers sit in the audience for once.
In 2026 the date happens to fall on a Saturday, so schools that run a half-day on Saturdays typically hold the function in that shortened morning.
Teachers' Day and World Teachers' Day are not the same day
This trips up a lot of school quizzes.
- Teachers' Day (India): 5 September, Radhakrishnan's birthday, observed since 1962.
- World Teachers' Day: 5 October, marked internationally under UNESCO.
Different dates, different origins. If you are asked which one India celebrates, the answer is 5 September — but knowing the other exists is the kind of detail that wins a quiz round.
Teachers' Day: day of the week by year
| Year | Day of the week | Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Thursday | 136th |
| 2025 | Friday | 137th |
| 2026 | Saturday | 138th |
| 2027 | Sunday | 139th |
| 2028 | Tuesday | 140th |
The day of the week moves forward by one each year, and by two across a leap year — which is why 2027 is a Sunday but 2028 jumps to Tuesday, skipping Monday.
What happens on Teachers' Day in school
The shape is fairly standard across the country. A welcome and a lamp lighting or prayer, speeches by students, cultural items — songs, dances, sometimes a skit affectionately imitating the teachers — a gift or token from each class, a vote of thanks, and often senior students teaching the junior classes afterwards.
If your name is on that programme, the good news is that expectations are kind. Nobody is looking for grand vocabulary. They are looking for someone who sounds like they mean it.
