Teachers' Day Speech in Tamil and English: Line by Line for 2026

You can hold the whole speech in Tamil in your head — what you want to say about your class teacher, why 5 September matters, how you want to end it — and still go blank the moment the school says the assembly is in English. The thoughts are not the problem. The matching is.

So this guide puts both languages side by side. Teachers' Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 5 September, the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and India's 65th Teachers' Day since the observance began in 1962. Below you get a 1-minute and a 3-minute speech written in Tamil and in English, line by line, plus the long English words broken into simple sounds and a bilingual version for schools that want both languages from one speaker.

Use it whichever way helps. Read only the Tamil. Read only the English. Or read the Tamil to settle the idea in your head and the English to deliver it on stage.

If you want an English-only version with a fill-in template and a phrase bank, the Teachers' Day speech in English guide covers that separately. This page is for the reader who thinks in Tamil.

Key Takeaways

  • Translating Tamil word for word gives you English in Tamil order. Translate the thought, not the words — and this guide shows both versions of every line.
  • The 1-minute speech below is 155 words in its English column and 104 in its Tamil one. The 3-minute speech is 390 English words.
  • 5 September 2026 is the 65th Teachers' Day and the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Both numbers are correct.
  • The four longest English words in the two speeches are responsibility, anniversary, opportunity and philosopher. Drill those four aloud before anything else.
  • In a bilingual speech, switch language at paragraph breaks, never in the middle of a sentence.

Why Does a Word-for-Word Tamil Translation Sound Wrong in English?

Because Tamil and English build a sentence from opposite ends. Tamil closes with the verb and glues the relationships onto the nouns as endings — -க்கு, -ஐ, -மீது. English opens with the verb early and carries those relationships in small separate words that sit before the noun — to, for, on, of. Move the words across one by one and you get the English vocabulary in the Tamil order, which reads backwards.

Take a line you might well write yourself:

Tamil: நான் என் ஆசிரியருக்கு மனமார்ந்த நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Word for word: "I my teacher-to heartfelt thanks-the conveying take."

Natural English: "I want to thank my teacher from the bottom of my heart."

Notice what the literal version drags along. தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன் is a compound verb, and the கொள் on the end is an auxiliary — it softens the verb and turns it back towards the speaker rather than adding meaning of its own. English has no separate word for it, so you drop it and let I want to do the same job.

Now a second one, which trips up a different part of the grammar:

Tamil: எனக்கு என் ஆசிரியர் மீது மிகுந்த மரியாதை உண்டு.

Word for word: "To-me my teacher on great respect is."

Natural English: "I have great respect for my teacher."

Tamil says respect exists to me. English says I have it. Any sentence you built on எனக்கு … உண்டு or எனக்கு … இருக்கிறது almost always becomes "I have…" in English, and the sentence turns the right way round the moment you make that swap.

The working method is simple. Read the Tamil line, look away from the page, ask yourself what it means, and say that in the shortest English you own. A short sentence also gives you fewer words between you and the full stop, which is fewer places to lose your line.

1-Minute Teachers' Day Speech in Tamil and English

155 words in English, which is a little over a minute at a calm stage pace. Good for Classes 5 to 8, or for a class programme where each student gets one slot.

Tamil English
மதிப்பிற்குரிய தலைமையாசிரியர் அவர்களே, அன்பிற்குரிய ஆசிரியர்களே, என் அன்பு நண்பர்களே — அனைவருக்கும் காலை வணக்கம். Respected Principal, dear teachers, and my dear friends — a very good morning to all of you.
இன்று நாம் ஆசிரியர் தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம்; எங்கள் ஆசிரியர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இனிய வாழ்த்துகள். Today we celebrate Teachers' Day, and I wish all our teachers a very happy day.
செப்டம்பர் ஐந்தாம் தேதி டாக்டர் சர்வபள்ளி ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்களின் பிறந்த நாள். The fifth of September is the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
அவர் நம் நாட்டின் இரண்டாவது குடியரசுத் தலைவர்; ஆனால் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் முன்பாக அவர் ஓர் ஆசிரியர். He was our country's second President, but before anything else he was a teacher.
அவருடைய பிறந்த நாளைக் கொண்டாட விரும்பியவர்களிடம், அந்த நாளை ஆசிரியர்களுக்காகக் கொண்டாடுமாறு அவர் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். When people wanted to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day be kept for teachers instead.
ஆசிரியர் என்பவர் பாடத்தை முடித்துவிட்டுச் செல்பவர் மட்டும் அல்ல. A teacher is not someone who only finishes the lesson and leaves.
எனக்குப் புரியாத ஒரு கணக்கை, இடைவேளையிலும் அமர்ந்து விளக்கிய ஆசிரியர் இன்றும் என் நினைவில் இருக்கிறார். I still remember the teacher who sat through the break to explain a sum I could not follow.
அந்தப் பொறுமையை நான் ஒருபோதும் மறக்க மாட்டேன். That patience is something I will never forget.
என் வகுப்பு மாணவர்கள் அனைவரின் சார்பாக, எங்கள் ஆசிரியர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் நன்றி. On behalf of my whole class, thank you to every one of our teachers.
நாங்கள் தரக்கூடிய மிகச் சிறந்த நன்றி, நேர்மையாகப் படிப்பதும் நல்ல மனிதர்களாக வளர்வதும்தான். The best thank you we can give you is to study honestly and to grow into good human beings.
அனைவருக்கும் இனிய ஆசிரியர் தின நல்வாழ்த்துகள். நன்றி, வணக்கம். A very happy Teachers' Day to all of you. Thank you.

3-Minute Teachers' Day Speech in Tamil and English

390 words in English, which sits close to three minutes. Suitable for Classes 9 to 12 and for the main assembly slot. Fill the blanks with your own name and class.

Tamil English
மதிப்பிற்குரிய சிறப்பு விருந்தினர் அவர்களே, மதிப்பிற்குரிய தலைமையாசிரியர் அவர்களே, அன்பிற்குரிய ஆசிரியர்களே, பெற்றோர்களே, என் அன்பு நண்பர்களே. Respected chief guest, respected Principal, dear teachers, parents, and my dear friends.
அனைவருக்கும் காலை வணக்கம்; இனிய ஆசிரியர் தின நல்வாழ்த்துகள். Good morning to all of you, and a very happy Teachers' Day.
நான் __________, ____ ஆம் வகுப்பு மாணவன் / மாணவி. இன்று உங்கள் முன் பேசும் வாய்ப்பு எனக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. I am __________ of Class ____, and today I have the opportunity to speak before you.
இன்று செப்டம்பர் ஐந்தாம் தேதி — டாக்டர் சர்வபள்ளி ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்களின் பிறந்த நாள். Today is the fifth of September, the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
1888ஆம் ஆண்டு இதே நாளில் அவர் பிறந்தார்; இது அவருடைய 138ஆவது பிறந்த நாள். He was born on this day in 1888, so this is his 138th birth anniversary.
அவர் இந்தியாவின் முதல் துணைக் குடியரசுத் தலைவராகவும், பின்னர் இரண்டாவது குடியரசுத் தலைவராகவும் பணியாற்றினார். He served as India's first Vice-President and later as our second President.
ஆனால் பொதுவாழ்வுக்கு வருவதற்கு முன், அவர் ஒரு தத்துவ அறிஞராகவும் ஆசிரியராகவும் இருந்தார். But before he entered public life, he was a philosopher and a teacher.
அவருடைய பிறந்த நாளைக் கொண்டாட விரும்பியவர்களிடம், அந்த நாளை ஆசிரியர் தினமாகக் கொண்டாடுமாறு அவர் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். When people wanted to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day be observed as Teachers' Day instead.
1962ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் இந்தியா அந்த நாளைக் கடைப்பிடித்து வருகிறது; இது நமது 65ஆவது ஆசிரியர் தினம். India has kept that day since 1962, and this is our 65th Teachers' Day.
எனவே இன்று ஒரு விடுமுறை நாள் அல்ல; இது நன்றி சொல்லும் நாள். So today is not a holiday. It is a day for saying thank you.
ஒரு நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சி வகுப்பறையிலிருந்துதான் தொடங்குகிறது. The growth of a country begins inside a classroom.
மருத்துவர், பொறியாளர், விவசாயி, ராணுவ வீரர் — இவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்குப் பின்னாலும் ஓர் ஆசிரியர் இருக்கிறார். Doctors, engineers, farmers, soldiers — behind every one of them there is a teacher.
நம் ஆசிரியர்கள் பாடத்தை மட்டும் சொல்லித் தருவதில்லை. Our teachers do not only teach us lessons.
நேர்மையாக இருப்பது எப்படி, தோல்விக்குப் பிறகு மீண்டும் எழுவது எப்படி என்பதையும் கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள். They teach us how to be honest, and how to stand up again after a failure.
நாம் தவறு செய்யும்போது திருத்துகிறார்கள்; நாம் சோர்ந்து போகும்போது தைரியம் தருகிறார்கள். When we make a mistake they correct us, and when we lose heart they give us courage.
நமக்கு முன்பே வகுப்பறைக்கு வருகிறார்கள்; நாம் சென்ற பிறகும் அங்கேயே இருக்கிறார்கள். They reach the classroom before we do, and they are still there after we leave.
நம் நோட்டுப் புத்தகங்களை வீட்டுக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்று, ஒவ்வொரு பக்கமாகத் திருத்தி, மறுநாள் காலை திரும்பத் தருகிறார்கள். They carry our notebooks home, correct every page, and hand them back the next morning.
அதற்காக அவர்கள் ஒருபோதும் நன்றி எதிர்பார்ப்பதில்லை. They never once expect a thank you in return.
என் ஆசிரியர்களை நான் நினைக்கும்போது, மதிப்பெண்கள் முதலில் நினைவுக்கு வருவதில்லை. When I think about my own teachers, the marks are not what come to mind first.
வகுப்பில் நான் அமைதியாகிவிட்டதைக் கவனித்து, மணி அடித்த பிறகு "எல்லாம் நலமா?" என்று கேட்ட ஆசிரியர்தான் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறார். I remember the teacher who noticed I had gone quiet in class, and who asked me after the bell whether everything was alright.
அந்த ஒரு கேள்வி, இந்தப் பள்ளியில் நான் வெறும் ஓர் எண் அல்ல என்பதை எனக்கு உணர்த்தியது. That one question made me feel that in this school I was not just a number.
ஆசிரியர்களே, நாங்கள் எப்போதும் வெளியே சொல்வதில்லை; ஆனால் நாங்கள் கவனிக்கிறோம். Teachers, we may not always say it, but we do notice.
உங்கள் பொறுமையை, உங்கள் உழைப்பை, எங்கள் மீது நீங்கள் வைத்திருக்கும் நம்பிக்கையை நாங்கள் கவனிக்கிறோம். We notice your patience, your hard work, and the faith you keep in us.
நீங்கள் தந்ததை நல்ல முறையில் பயன்படுத்துவது எங்கள் பொறுப்பு; அதை நாங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறோம். Using well what you have given us is our responsibility, and we accept it.
மலர்களும் வாழ்த்து அட்டைகளும் இன்றோடு முடிந்துவிடும்; ஆனால் ஓர் ஆசிரியர் கற்றுத் தந்த பாடம் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் நிலைத்திருக்கும். Flowers and cards last only for today, but a lesson a teacher gives stays for a lifetime.
இங்கிருக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு மாணவரின் சார்பாகவும், எளிய ஒரு நன்றியை நான் சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன். On behalf of every student here, I want to say one simple thank you.
உங்கள் நேரத்திற்கும், பொறுமைக்கும், அன்பிற்கும் நன்றி. உங்களைப் பெருமைப்படுத்துவோம் என்று உறுதி அளிக்கிறோம். Thank you for your time, your patience, and your care. We promise to make you proud.
அனைத்து ஆசிரியர்களுக்கும் இனிய ஆசிரியர் தின நல்வாழ்த்துகள். நன்றி, வணக்கம். A very happy Teachers' Day to all our teachers. Thank you.

How Do I Put My Own Teacher Into the Speech?

Both speeches above carry one memory line — the break-time sum in the 1-minute version, the "எல்லாம் நலமா?" question in the 3-minute one. Swap it for something that actually happened to you. That single line is the part of the speech nobody else on the programme can read off the same page.

Pick a row below, fill the blanks, and put it where the existing memory line sits.

Tamil English
நான் __________ பாடத்தில் பின்தங்கியிருந்தபோது, __________ ஆசிரியர் எனக்குப் புரியும் வரை தனியாக அமர்ந்து சொல்லித் தந்தார். When I was falling behind in __________, __________ sir / ma'am sat with me separately until I understood it.
__________ ஆசிரியர் சொன்ன ஒரு வார்த்தை இன்றும் என் நினைவில் இருக்கிறது — "__________". One thing __________ sir / ma'am said has stayed with me to this day — "__________".
__________ போட்டிக்கு என்னைத் தயார்படுத்தியவர் __________ ஆசிரியர்தான். It was __________ sir / ma'am who prepared me for the __________ competition.
வகுப்பில் பேசவே எனக்குப் பயமாக இருந்தது; __________ ஆசிரியர்தான் முதல் முறையாக என்னை மேடையில் ஏற்றினார். I used to be afraid even to speak in class; it was __________ sir / ma'am who first put me on a stage.
__________ ஆசிரியரிடம் நான் கற்றது __________ பாடம் மட்டும் அல்ல; __________ என்பதையும் கற்றேன். What I learned from __________ sir / ma'am was not only __________; I also learned __________.

No row here runs past about twenty English words, so dropping one in costs you under ten seconds of stage time. If your slot is tight, take the same number of words out of the middle of the speech — never out of the greeting or the closing thanks.

When you name the teacher in the Tamil half, __________ ஆசிரியர் is the form to use on stage; keep டீச்சர் for the corridor. And keep the tenses straight across the swap: the memory is past, the thanks around it is present.

Which English Words Should I Drill Before the Assembly?

Start with four. Leaving the name Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan aside — Tamil handles that one comfortably — these are the four longest English words in the two speeches above, and each one hangs its whole shape on a single stressed syllable. The six rows after them are six more words from the same two speeches, picked because Tamil habits and English spelling pull in different directions on each one.

Word Say it as Watch out for
responsibility ri-spon-si-BIL-i-tee letting all six syllables come out at the same weight
anniversary an-i-VUR-suh-ree a flat middle, with no lift on VUR
opportunity op-uh-TYOO-ni-tee splitting the double p into two separate taps
philosopher fi-LOSS-uh-fer stressing the ending: "philo-SOPHER"
September sep-TEM-ber a soft p where the b should be
patience PAY-shuns stretching it into "pay-shee-ance"
classroom CLASS-room two equal stresses instead of one on CLASS
honestly ON-est-lee sounding the h, which is silent
notebooks NOTE-books the final s, which is a z sound here
celebrate CEL-uh-brayt a flat first syllable

Two habits are worth building alongside the list. The first is stress. Tamil gives its syllables a fairly even weight, and long English words lose their shape when they come out level. Deliberately push one syllable harder than the rest — hard enough that it feels exaggerated to you while you are saying it.

The second is word endings. Tamil words rarely stop on a hard consonant, so a small u can slip onto the end of an English one — September-u, thank-u, notebook-u. Land the last consonant and stop there. The same care fixes the b in September and notebooks: Tamil writes one letter for the p / b pair, so the b needs a deliberate push of voice behind it.

Paste the English lines of the speech into Read Aloud practice (free with a TalkDrill account) and read them aloud: it scores your pronunciation word by word so you can see which lines actually landed. For a wider set of practice text, our read-aloud English passages for pronunciation work the same way.

How Do I Deliver a Bilingual Tamil and English Speech?

Switch language at paragraph breaks, never inside a sentence. Mixing mid-sentence means translating while you are already speaking, and a sentence that starts in Tamil word order and finishes in English word order usually ends up in neither.

A pattern that is easy to hold together on a school stage is a Tamil opening, an English body and a Tamil close. Each block is long enough to settle into, and you change language only twice in the whole speech. Something like this:

Tamil: மதிப்பிற்குரிய தலைமையாசிரியர் அவர்களே, அன்பிற்குரிய ஆசிரியர்களே, என் அன்பு நண்பர்களே — அனைவருக்கும் இனிய ஆசிரியர் தின நல்வாழ்த்துகள்.

English: Today, the fifth of September, we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan — India's first Vice-President, our second President, and a teacher long before either of those. When people wanted to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day be kept for teachers instead. That request is still what this day means. Our teachers reach the classroom before we do and stay after we leave, and they never ask to be thanked for it. Today we are taking one minute to thank them.

Tamil: ஆசிரியர்களே, உங்கள் பொறுமைக்கும் அன்பிற்கும் எங்கள் மனமார்ந்த நன்றி. உங்களைப் பெருமைப்படுத்துவோம். நன்றி, வணக்கம்.

Announce nothing when you switch. Do not say "and now in English". Pause for one beat and carry on — the pause does the work for you.

If your school runs the same idea in Hindi as well, the Teachers' Day speech in Hindi and English guide has the matching line-by-line version.

Which Tamil Words of Respect Belong in a School Speech?

The Tamil half of your speech lives or dies on its address forms. Get these six right and the register is correct before you have said anything else.

Tamil Where it goes What it does in the English half
மதிப்பிற்குரிய before the Principal, the chief guest, any senior guest "respected"
அன்பிற்குரிய before ஆசிரியர்கள் and நண்பர்கள் "dear"
அவர்களே after the person's title, to address them directly carried inside "Respected Principal"
ஐயா / அம்மா if you turn and speak to one teacher mid-speech "sir" / "ma'am"
நல்வாழ்த்துகள் in the opening wish and again at the close "a very happy Teachers' Day"
நன்றி, வணக்கம் the last two words, said together "Thank you."

Aim for clear spoken Tamil, not literary Tamil. A stage speech that reaches for heavy செந்தமிழ் phrasing gets harder to say the moment your throat tightens, and every extra syllable is one more place to trip. The lines in the tables above are written to be said aloud at speed by a nervous speaker.

The other half of the register rule is downward: keep நீ, and the -டா / -டி endings, out of it entirely, even when you are talking about your own friends. On a school stage you are speaking to the whole ground, not to your bench.

How Do I Practise This If My English Is Weak?

Work in this order. Each step depends on the one before it, so do not jump ahead to memorising.

  1. Read the Tamil column aloud once. You are checking that you agree with these ideas, not memorising them.
  2. Read the English column aloud slowly, line by line, with the Tamil in view. Do not memorise yet. You are only tying each English line to a thought you already hold.
  3. Cover the Tamil and read only the English. Put a pencil mark against every line where you hesitate, and leave the lines that already run smoothly alone.
  4. Drill only the marked lines, ten times each. Out loud, standing, at full volume.
  5. Read the whole English speech with a stopwatch. Aim for one minute or three, depending on the version you picked.
  6. Do the full run standing up, twice. Make the last rehearsal match the real thing — same posture, same volume, same speed.

Split this across a few short sessions rather than one long one on 4 September. The night before should be a revision, not a first attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words is a 1-minute Teachers' Day speech in Tamil?

Counting words will mislead you here. The English column of the 1-minute speech above is 155 words; the Tamil column of the same speech is 104. Tamil folds what English needs three or four words for into one word with endings, so the Tamil looks much shorter on the page while taking about as long to say, because each of those words carries more syllables. Read your version into a stopwatch and time the actual delivery instead.

Can I write my speech in Tamil and deliver it in English?

Yes, and it is a sensible way to work if Tamil is where you think. Draft it in Tamil, translate thought by thought rather than word by word using the tables above, then rehearse only the English version aloud. What matters on stage is that the English you finally say is simple and correct, not the route you took to reach it.

Is it ஆசிரியர் தினம் or ஆசிரியர்கள் தினம்?

Say ஆசிரியர் தினம். In a Tamil compound the first noun is normally left unmarked for number, so the plural ஆசிரியர்கள் தினம் adds weight without adding meaning. The same rule is why you say மாணவர் விடுதி, not மாணவர்கள் விடுதி.

Which Tamil greeting should I open with?

வணக்கம் carries no time of day at all, so it is safe whenever the programme is scheduled. If you want the hour in there, use காலை வணக்கம் for a morning assembly and மாலை வணக்கம் for an evening function. In the English portion, "good morning" before noon and "good afternoon" after it.

Is 5 September 2026 the 65th Teachers' Day?

Yes. India has observed Teachers' Day since 1962, so 5 September 2026 is the 65th. It is also the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5 September 1888. Note that in 2026 the date falls on a Saturday, so check with your school which day the programme is actually being held. The Teachers' Day 2026 guide has the full background.

Is this the same as World Teachers' Day?

No, they are two different days. India's Teachers' Day is 5 September, marking Dr. Radhakrishnan's birthday. UNESCO's World Teachers' Day is 5 October. If your speech mentions both, keep the two dates clearly apart, and if it mentions only one, make it 5 September — that is the day your school is celebrating.

What if I forget a line in the middle of the speech?

Move to the next idea instead of hunting for the exact sentence. Because you learned this speech as thoughts with a Tamil line behind each one, you can rejoin at any point in the table. A short pause and a fresh sentence keeps the speech moving. Standing frozen while you search for one exact word does not.

Where can I find a shorter version for a younger child?

The Teachers' Day speech for kids guide has short versions written for Classes 1 to 5, with the longer words taken out. For more length options in English, the Teachers' Day speech in English guide has one-minute and three-minute samples plus a fill-in template.

Bringing It Together

Speaking on 5 September in a language you are still building is not a vocabulary problem. It is a matching problem. The thoughts are already there in Tamil — you need to see which English sentence carries each one, and then say those sentences aloud enough times that your mouth stops hesitating.

Pick the 1-minute or the 3-minute version above. Read the Tamil column once to settle the ideas, then work down the English column line by line, marking the lines that catch you and drilling only those. Practise standing, with a stopwatch, across a few short sessions rather than one long one.

If you are also compering the programme, the Teachers' Day anchoring script has the linking lines between items, which is a separate job from the speech itself.

Then do the part that reading silently cannot replace: say it out loud. Paste the English lines of your speech into Read Aloud practice (free with a TalkDrill account), read them out, and let it show you word by word where the sounds are slipping.

அனைத்து ஆசிரியர்களுக்கும் இனிய ஆசிரியர் தின நல்வாழ்த்துகள். நன்றி, வணக்கம்.
