Teachers' Day Essay in English: Three Lengths for 5 September 2026
If your school has asked for a Teachers' Day essay, the first thing to settle is the length. A hundred words, two hundred and fifty, and five hundred are three different pieces of writing — not one piece stretched or squeezed to fit. Write the wrong one beautifully and it still reads as the wrong one.
This guide has all three, finished and ready to hand in. Teachers' Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 5 September. It is the 65th Teachers' Day India has observed and the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, so every number in the essays below is correct for this year.
After the essays comes the part that is worth more than any of them: how the thing is actually built. Where to start, what belongs in the middle, and how to finish without reaching for the candle-that-burns-itself line. That part is reusable — the same five-paragraph shape carries a Teachers' Day essay, a farewell essay and an Independence Day one.
One note before you start. This is an essay, not a speech. If you have been asked to stand up and say something in the assembly, you want the Teachers' Day speech in English instead. Written English and spoken English are built differently, and that difference is explained further down.
Key Takeaways
- Teachers' Day 2026 is Saturday, 5 September — the 65th Teachers' Day and the 138th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
- Three finished essays below: 100 words, 250 words and 500 words. Each is complete and usable as it stands.
- Write to the length you were given. A 250-word answer padded out to 500 is a weaker piece than the 250-word answer was.
- One concrete picture — a teacher doing one specific thing — is a sentence only you could have written. A paragraph of adjectives is not.
- An essay is read; a speech is heard. If you have to deliver this aloud, use the speech guide instead.
What Should a Teachers' Day Essay Actually Contain?
Three things, in this order: why the day exists, what teachers actually do, and what you intend to do about it. Everything else in a Teachers' Day essay is decoration around those three.
The first part is factual and short. The 5th of September, Dr. Radhakrishnan, the reason the date was chosen. It is also easy to over-write, because it is the only part you can look up.
The second part carries the weight, and it is the part where adjectives are easiest to reach for. Kind, caring, hardworking, selfless. An essay built out of those four words could have been written by somebody who has never sat in a classroom. Replace them with one thing that happened: a notebook corrected at eleven at night, a step explained a fourth time, a question asked quietly after the bell.
The third part is easy to leave until you are out of time and out of page — and it is the last thing the reader sees. Give it real effort. It is also the only part of the essay that is genuinely yours.
Keep the language plain throughout. A warm subject invites heavy English: long sentences, borrowed phrases, words you would never use out loud. The three essays below are deliberately written the other way — short sentences and ordinary words.
Teachers' Day Essay: 100 Words
For Classes 3 to 6, or when the question asks for a short paragraph. This one runs exactly 100 words.
Teachers' Day is celebrated in India on the 5th of September every year. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday. The date is the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a teacher and philosopher who later became India's first Vice-President and second President. The story goes that when his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day honour all teachers instead. On this day we thank the people who teach us to read, to think and to be honest. Our school holds an assembly with speeches, songs and gifts. A good teacher gives us far more than lessons.
To make this yours, replace the second-last sentence with what your own school actually does. If you make cards, say cards. If the seniors take the junior classes, say that.
Teachers' Day Essay: 250 Words
Use this when the question asks for 250 words, and when no length is given in Classes 6 to 10. It runs exactly 250 words across five paragraphs.
Teachers' Day is celebrated across India on the 5th of September. In 2026 the date falls on a Saturday, and it is India's 65th Teachers' Day. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born on 5 September 1888.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was a philosopher and a teacher long before he entered public life. He went on to become India's first Vice-President and its second President. The widely told account is that when his students asked to celebrate his birthday, he asked instead that the day be observed as Teachers' Day. India has done so since 1962.
A teacher's work is easy to overlook because so much of it happens quietly. Homework is corrected after school hours. A doubt is explained a second and third time without complaint. A student who has gone quiet is noticed and asked what is wrong. None of that appears in any syllabus.
Schools mark the day with an assembly, speeches, cultural programmes and small gifts. One tradition hands the classes to the senior students for a day so they can teach the juniors themselves — a short lesson in how hard the job is.
The best way to thank a teacher is not on 5 September. It is in the work we hand in on an ordinary Tuesday, in the way we treat a classmate nobody is being kind to, and in the honesty we keep when nobody is checking. That is what our teachers have been trying to teach us. Happy Teachers' Day.
Teachers' Day Essay: 500 Words
For senior classes, essay competitions and longer written examinations. This version runs about 500 words and uses the same five-part structure with more room in each part.
Introduction
Teachers' Day is observed in India on the 5th of September every year. In 2026 the date falls on a Saturday, and the country marks its 65th Teachers' Day. Schools set the ordinary timetable aside for it, and the reason is straightforward. The day exists to thank the one profession that every other profession is built on top of.
Why the 5th of September
The date is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5 September 1888; 2026 is his 138th birth anniversary. He was a philosopher and a teacher for many years before he entered public life, and he later served as India's first Vice-President from 1952 to 1962 and as its second President from 1962 to 1967. The account usually told is that when his students asked to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day be observed as Teachers' Day instead. India has done so since 1962. The date is his birthday, but the day is not about him, and it was he who asked for it that way.
What a teacher actually does
It is easy to describe teaching as delivering a syllabus, and easy to miss almost everything that matters in it. A syllabus can be delivered by a textbook. What a textbook cannot do is notice that a student has stopped putting her hand up, stay back after the bell to explain the same step a fourth time, or say the one sentence that convinces a boy who has decided he is bad at mathematics that he is not. Teachers carry stacks of notebooks home. They remember whose father lost his job. They are among the first adults outside our own families whose good opinion we work to earn. Years later we forget the chapters and remember the person.
How the day is celebrated
Schools mark the 5th of September with a morning assembly, speeches by students, cultural performances, handmade cards and flowers. One tradition hands the timetable over to the senior students for the day so that they can teach the junior classes themselves — an hour of which explains more about the job than any speech can.
What the day asks of us
Gratitude that lasts one morning is not really gratitude. The 5th of September is a good day to say thank you out loud, but a teacher is thanked far more convincingly on the ordinary days: by work handed in on time, by a question asked instead of a doubt hidden, by silence when somebody else is speaking, and by the way we treat the classmate nobody has bothered to be kind to. In the end every teacher is trying to build the same thing — an adult who is decent, curious and honest even when nobody is watching. If we become that, we have thanked them properly.
There is one more thing worth doing, and it takes about ten seconds. Find the teacher who changed something in you, and tell them plainly that they did. It costs nothing, and it is the one form of thanks a teacher cannot give themselves.

What Structure Should I Use to Write My Own?
Five paragraphs. The same five work at every length; you simply write more or fewer sentences in each one.
| Paragraph | What goes in it | Rough share |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | The date, the year, whose birthday it is | 15% |
| Why 5 September | Dr. Radhakrishnan, his request, observed since 1962 | 20% |
| What teachers do | One concrete picture, not four adjectives | 30% |
| How the day is celebrated | Assembly, cards, seniors taking the classes | 15% |
| Close | What you intend to do about it | 20% |
Two habits do most of the work. First, put one specific thing in every paragraph — a year, a name, a moment, an object. Second, write the last paragraph first if you have time, so that it gets your attention while you still have some left.
How Do I Open a Teachers' Day Essay?
Open with a fact or with a picture. Both work; a general statement about the importance of education does not, because it could sit at the top of any essay on any subject.
The factual opening is the safe one and takes one sentence: "Teachers' Day is celebrated in India on the 5th of September, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan." Then move straight on. It needs no build-up.
The picture opening is stronger when you can pull it off. Start with something small and real, then widen: "There is a teacher in this school who still has my Class 6 answer sheet in her drawer. On the 5th of September, I understand why."
What to avoid is the throat-clearing sentence — "Since time immemorial, teachers have played a vital role in shaping society." It costs you a full line and tells the reader nothing they did not already know.
What Belongs in the Middle?
One thing that actually happened, told properly, plus the general point it proves. That order matters: the specific first, the general afterwards.
Adjectives make weak evidence. Our teachers are very kind and hardworking is a sentence anybody can write about anybody. Our physics teacher came in on a Sunday to run an extra class before the pre-boards, and did not mention it afterwards is a sentence only somebody who was there can write.
If you are struggling to find one, use this to dig it out and then rewrite it in your own words:
When I was struggling with __________ (a subject, a term, a bad week), __________ (a teacher's name, or "my class teacher") __________ (what they did — the actual action, not the feeling). Because of that, __________ (what changed).
Keep names respectful and keep the story short. Two or three sentences is plenty; the middle of an essay is not the place for a full anecdote with dialogue.
How Do I End It Without a Cliché?
Look hard at four stock endings for this topic. Each one has a problem inside it that you can see the moment it is pointed out.
- "A teacher is a candle that burns itself to give light to others." Read literally, this praises a teacher for being destroyed by the job. That is not a compliment.
- "Teachers are the backbone of our society." A backbone is invisible and never thanked, which is the opposite of what the day is for.
- "Teachers build the nation." True, and so general that it says nothing about your teachers.
- "Happy Teachers' Day to all the teachers of the world." This is a greeting, not a conclusion. It ends the page without ending the argument.
Three endings that do work:
- Name what you will do. "I cannot repay what my teachers have given me. I can hand in work they will not be embarrassed by, and that is a start."
- Turn and address them, for one line only. "Ma'am, you probably do not remember the afternoon you stayed back with me. I have not forgotten it."
- Close on one small image. "Somewhere in this building there is a drawer full of our old answer sheets. That is what being taught looks like."
Whichever you choose, make the final sentence short. A long sentence at the end of an essay loses its own ending.
What Can I Write About Dr. Radhakrishnan?
Here is a paragraph you can lift straight into any of the three essays above, or into your own. It contains only things that are documented, and it runs 90 words.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888. He was a philosopher and a teacher, and he taught for many years before he entered public life. He served as India's first Vice-President from 1952 to 1962 and as its second President from 1962 to 1967. The account usually told is that when his students asked to celebrate his birthday, he asked that the day be observed as Teachers' Day instead. India has done so since 1962, and 2026 marks his 138th birth anniversary and the country's 65th Teachers' Day.
One caution. Quotations attributed to Dr. Radhakrishnan are easy to find online and hard to source, and putting invented words in his mouth is an easy way to get something wrong on the page. Describe what he did and what he asked for instead. That part is documented, and it is more interesting than a quotation anyway.
Worth keeping separate: World Teachers' Day is 5 October, observed internationally under UNESCO. India's Teachers' Day is 5 September. They are two different days and mixing them up in the opening line of an essay is an avoidable error.
Which Quotes About Teachers Can I Safely Use?
These lines are genuinely well known and correctly attributable. Use one in a 250-word essay and at most two in a 500-word essay — a page of quotations reads as a collection rather than an essay.
| Line | Who said it |
|---|---|
| "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." | Henry Adams, The Education of Henry Adams |
| "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." | Nelson Mandela |
| "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." | William Arthur Ward |
| "One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world." | Malala Yousafzai, at the United Nations, 2013 |
| "Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, calibre and future of an individual." | Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam |
Place a quotation where it does a job. The Henry Adams line sits well at the end of the paragraph about what teachers do, because it explains why that work is hard to see. Mandela's line belongs near a sentence about education changing lives. A quotation dropped into the opening, before you have said anything of your own, is decoration.
If you cannot say who said a line, do not attribute it to anybody. Lines that travel as "a Chinese proverb" or "anonymous" fall in that group: there is no name to check them against, so they are left out of the table above. Write the thought in your own words instead — an unattributed sentence of your own is safer, and usually better, than a grand line pinned on the wrong person.
Is This an Essay or a Speech?
Use an essay when the work will be read, and a speech when it will be heard. They are genuinely different pieces of writing, and handing in one where the other was asked for is easy to avoid once you know the difference.
| Essay | Speech | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | One reader, at their own pace | A room, in one pass |
| Sentences | Can be longer; the reader can go back | Short; a listener cannot rewind |
| Address | Third person, formal register | Direct — "respected Principal, dear teachers" |
| Repetition | Looks like padding | Helps the listener follow |
| Ending | A considered final paragraph | A line strong enough to be the last thing heard |
| Length measured in | Words | Minutes |
If you have to deliver this in front of the school, start from the Teachers' Day speech in English, which has one-minute and three-minute versions written to be spoken. Younger children are better served by the short Teachers' Day speeches for kids. If it is easier for you to think in Hindi first, the Teachers' Day speech in Hindi and English puts both languages side by side.
What Should I Check Before Handing It In?
Six checks, and every one of them has a yes-or-no answer you can find on the page in front of you. None of them requires an opinion about your writing.
| Check | How to settle it |
|---|---|
| Word count | Count it, do not estimate. If the question said 250, land within about ten words either side. |
| The date | 5 September. If you name the day of the week, it is Saturday in 2026. |
| The two numbers | 65th Teachers' Day, counted from 1962. 138th birth anniversary, counted from 1888. They are different counts of different things. |
| One specific thing per paragraph | Point at it with your finger — a year, a name, an object, a moment. A paragraph with none of those in it is decoration. |
| Quotations | Every quoted line has a named person beside it. If it does not, drop the quotation marks and write the thought yourself. |
| The last sentence | Read the final sentence on its own. If it could end an essay on any other subject, it is not your ending yet. |
The trickiest one is the date. If you have copied a paragraph from last year's essay or from another site, the day of the week, the anniversary number and the count of the observance are the three things that go stale, and they go stale silently — the sentence still reads perfectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words should a Teachers' Day essay be?
Write the length your question asks for. Where no length is given, 100 words suits Classes 3 to 6, 250 words fits Classes 6 to 10, and 500 words fits senior classes and competitions. Padding a short answer out to twice its length adds repetition, not substance, and the repetition is visible on the page.
Why is Teachers' Day celebrated on 5 September in India?
Because it is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born on 5 September 1888, who was a teacher and philosopher before becoming India's first Vice-President and second President. The account usually told is that when his students asked to mark his birthday, he asked that the day honour all teachers instead. India has observed it that way since 1962. The full background is in our Teachers' Day 2026 guide.
Is 2026 the 64th or the 65th Teachers' Day?
It is the 65th. India has observed Teachers' Day since 1962, so counting the observances from 1962 through 2026 gives 65. Keep this number separate from Dr. Radhakrishnan's 138th birth anniversary, which is counted from his birth in 1888. Both figures are correct and they count two different things: observances of the day, and years since his birth.
Can I use my Teachers' Day essay as a speech?
Not as it stands. Convert it: shorten the sentences, add direct address at the top, cut anything that needs a second reading to follow, and end on a line strong enough to be the last thing the room hears. Reading an essay aloud from the stage sounds like an essay being read aloud — the long sentences and the third-person register are audible from the first line.
What should I write in the conclusion of a Teachers' Day essay?
Write what you intend to do, not a summary of what you have already said. Something specific and achievable — work handed in on time, a question asked instead of hidden, a thank-you actually said to a particular teacher — is a sentence only you could have written. One more line about how important teachers are is not.
Should I mention World Teachers' Day on 5 October?
Only if the question invites an international angle, and only in one sentence. World Teachers' Day is 5 October and is observed internationally under UNESCO; India's Teachers' Day is 5 September. An essay that mixes the two dates carries a factual error in its opening line, so if you are not sure of the distinction, leave 5 October out.
Can I write the essay in Hindi first and translate it?
You can, as long as you translate the idea rather than the words. Word-for-word translation produces English that runs in the wrong order, because Hindi and English arrange a sentence differently. The Teachers' Day speech in Hindi and English shows how each Hindi line maps onto natural English rather than literal English.
Bringing It Together
A Teachers' Day essay is not hard to write well. It is very easy to write forgettably, because the subject invites warm words that mean nothing in particular. The three essays above are ready to use as they stand — 100 words for a short paragraph, 250 for a mid-length assignment, 500 for competitions and senior classes.
If you are writing your own, use the five-paragraph structure, put one concrete thing in every paragraph, borrow the Radhakrishnan paragraph rather than inventing quotations for him, and give the last paragraph the effort the history section can quietly eat.
Then do the check that catches what silent reading hides: read the finished essay out loud. Sentences that run out of breath, repeated words, and endings that fall flat are all invisible on the page and obvious in your own voice. Paste a paragraph into Read Aloud practice (free with a TalkDrill account), read it out, and see where it stumbles before your teacher does.
And if you are speaking rather than writing on the 5th, the Teachers' Day speech guide is the one you want. If you are running the programme itself, the Teachers' Day anchoring script covers the rest of the morning.
Happy Teachers' Day.
