How to use this reviewer

This is a free vocabulary and analogy reviewer for the Philippines Civil Service Exam (CSE-PPT): 300 words with meanings, a synonym and an opposite, of which 30 are commonly confused pairs, plus 60 analogies in six timed sets with full answer keys. Everything here is written by TalkDrill. CSC publishes no word list, so the words are grouped by theme rather than by how often they appear, and the choice of words is our judgement of the level CSE-style vocabulary items use. Learn 20 words a day, say each one aloud in a sentence, and do one analogy set every other day. The next sitting is 14 March 2027; applications open on 2 November 2026 and run until the 350,000 target slots fill, per CSC Examination Announcement No. 05, s. 2026.

At a glance:
  • Ten groups: nine themed groups of 30 words and one group of 30 confusable words (15 pairs).
  • Every word in the nine themed groups has a synonym; most have an opposite, because synonym and antonym items are the usual formats.
  • Six analogy sets of ten, each with a 5-minute target (ours) and a key that names the relationship.
  • Per the 2026 announcement (confirm in the March 2027 announcement): vocabulary sits in the Verbal Ability part, in English and Filipino, at both levels; the passing rating was 80.00.

If you have not yet seen how the English items work, start with the CSE English reviewer, which explains all four item families. To test the words under time, use the practice bank: every set opens with vocabulary and analogy items.

How vocabulary is tested

Vocabulary on the CSE is never "write the definition". It is always multiple choice, and the wrong options are chosen to catch specific mistakes. Knowing the formats tells you which mistake each item is fishing for.

FormatWhat it looks likeThe usual trap
SynonymA word in capitals; choose the closest meaningA look-alike word (indigent and indigenous) or a word from the same topic
AntonymA word in capitals; choose the oppositeThe synonym, for readers who skip the word OPPOSITE; or the opposite of a near-synonym (generous for frugal)
Word in contextA sentence with one word in capitalsThe word's most common meaning, when the sentence uses another one
IdiomAn expression such as "out of the blue"Reading the words literally (blue as sad)
AnalogyWORD : WORD :: WORD : ______An option from the right topic with the wrong relationship, or the pair reversed

Two habits beat every trap. First, say the meaning of the capital-letter word to yourself before you look at the options. Second, in a sentence item, read the whole sentence and find the clue that proves the meaning: a result clause, a contrast, an example. The practice bank explains the trap in every vocabulary item it contains.

The 300-word list

Each table gives the word, a plain meaning, a synonym and an opposite. Where English has no common one-word opposite, the table says so rather than forcing one. Cover the last three columns with a card to test yourself. Groups 1 to 9 are below; group 10, the confusable words, has its own section. We write in British spelling (analyse, sceptical, judgement); Philippine schools and newspapers mostly use American spelling (analyze, skeptical, judgment). Both are standard English, so learn the meaning and use the spelling you were taught.

30 words examinees confuse

These fifteen pairs look or sound alike but mean different things. Correct-usage items use them as traps, often inside a sentence where the wrong one looks natural. Several, such as principal and principle or stationary and stationery, also turn up in official letters and memos, so they are worth getting right for the job too.

Three quick memory lines (ours): stationery has an e, like envelope; the principal is your pal at the head of the school; a council is a group you can count, and counsel is advice you can sell.

How to learn 300 words in 15 days

Lists are easy to read and hard to keep. This plan is ours and fits inside the 4-month roadmap to 14 March 2027.

DayNew wordsReviewTime
1 to 1520 a day, in list order (group 1 words 1 to 20 on day 1, and so on)Day 3 and day 7 after learning each batch15 to 20 minutes
16 to 18NoneCover the meaning column for all 300; mark every word you miss20 minutes
19 onwardsNoneOnly the marked words, plus one analogy set every other day10 minutes

For each new word, do three things. Say it aloud. Make one sentence of your own about your life or your work ("The new system will streamline our filing"). Then say the opposite in a second sentence. That takes under a minute per word and gives you the meaning in context, which is how the exam tests it. Free short drills such as Word Power keep the words moving between sessions, and the vocabulary books in the TalkDrill library add more words in use.

Say them aloud: a stress guide

The written exam does not test pronunciation, but saying a word aloud fixes it in memory, and the panel interview after eligibility does test how you speak. These fifteen words from the list are often stressed on the wrong syllable. The stressed syllable is in capitals; the guides are written by TalkDrill.

To hear yourself, record a sentence with each word in TalkDrill's Read Aloud practice; the report flags mispronounced or skipped words (Read Aloud practice is part of TalkDrill Pro). The free word stress exercises explain the patterns behind these words.

Analogy types and the sentence method

An analogy item gives you a pair of words with a relationship and asks you to find a second pair with the same relationship. The skill is naming the relationship exactly, including its direction. The method (ours) has three steps: say the first pair as a sentence; test each option in the same sentence; if two survive, make the sentence more precise.

RelationshipSentence to testExample
SynonymA means the same as BOBSTINATE : STUBBORN
AntonymA is the opposite of BFRUGAL : EXTRAVAGANT
Part to wholeA is part of BCHAPTER : NOVEL
Member to groupA belongs to a group called BWOLF : PACK
Member to categoryA is a kind of BSAMPAGUITA : FLOWER
Worker to toolA uses B to workJUDGE : GAVEL
Worker to productA makes BBAKER : BREAD
Cause to effectA causes BPRACTICE : SKILL
LackA has no BTRAITOR : LOYALTY
DegreeA is a milder or stronger form of BDRIZZLE : DOWNPOUR
Stage of growthA grows into BTADPOLE : FROG
Instrument to measureA measures or shows BCLOCK : TIME
SymbolA stands for BDOVE : PEACE

The most common trap is an option from the right topic with the wrong relationship. For BAKER : BREAD :: TAILOR : ______, needle, cloth, shop and clothes are all about tailoring, but only clothes fits "a tailor makes ______". The second most common trap is the reversed pair: for SEED : TREE, an option that goes from adult to young form looks right but runs the wrong way.

60 analogies in six timed sets

Write your answers on paper, then check the key under each set. Sets 1 and 2 are the gentlest; sets 5 and 6 add Philippine general knowledge and harder words, as some CSE-style analogies do. If you score under 8 on a set, redo it after two days without looking at the key first.

Set 1: analogies 1 to 10

Target: 5 minutes for ten items (our practice target, 30 seconds each). Say the relationship as a sentence before you read the options.

Set 1 answer key (written by TalkDrill)

  1. B, hat. Body part to what covers it. Hair grows on the head; it is not worn.
  2. D, generous. Person to the quality they lack. A coward is not brave; a miser is not generous. Stingy describes the miser, so it reverses the pattern.
  3. A, brick. Raw material to a product made from it. A kiln is the oven that fires clay, a tool rather than a product.
  4. C, exhibits. Person to what they look after. Museum is the workplace, which is the trap.
  5. D, play. Part to whole. A scene is part of a play; actors and the stage belong to a performance, not to its structure.
  6. A, rain. A shortage to what is lacking. Heat often comes with a drought but is not what is missing.
  7. B, rapid. Synonyms. Race and runner are linked to speed but are nouns, not descriptions.
  8. C, fuel. A tool to what it uses up in order to work. A wheel is a part of the car, a different relationship.
  9. B, clothes. Worker to what they make. Needle is the tool and cloth the material.
  10. A, touch. Organ to the sense it serves.

20. HEAT : MELT :: COLD : ______
A. ice

D. snow

Set 2 answer key (written by TalkDrill)

  1. D, distance. Unit to what it measures. Metre is a smaller unit of the same thing, not what it measures.
  2. A, army. Member to group. Gun and uniform are things a soldier uses or wears.
  3. C, stubborn. Synonyms. Flexible is the opposite, placed for readers who reverse the pair.
  4. B, arrogant. Antonyms. Modest is a synonym of humble.
  5. D, bird. Early stage to grown form. Shell and yolk are parts of the egg.
  6. A, bird. The body part used for moving, to the animal it belongs to. Fly is the action, not the animal.
  7. C, blueprint. Creator to the draft or plan they produce before the finished work. The building is the end product, like the printed book.
  8. B, screw. Tool to the thing it drives in. A bolt is turned with a spanner.
  9. D, classroom. Worker to the place where they do the work. Student is the person served.
  10. C, freeze. Cause to the change it produces. Ice is the result of freezing, a thing rather than a process.

  2. Every other day, do one analogy set with the 5-minute timer and log your score.
  3. Once a week, do one set from the practice bank to test the words among grammar, paragraph and reading items.
  4. Check your first-language traps. Tagalog speakers: English traps for Tagalog speakers. Bisaya and Ilocano speakers, whose e and i or o and u can swap in spelling: English traps for Bisaya and Ilocano speakers.
  5. Move on to grammar with the grammar and correct usage page once vocabulary sets reach 8 out of 10.
  6. After the exam, use the group 2 words with real evidence in the AI mock interview: "I am meticulous" is weak; "I check every receipt twice before filing" is strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official civil service exam vocabulary list?

No. CSC does not publish a word list in anything we could find, and the items test meaning in context, so any list is a study aid, not a syllabus. Ours has 300 words grouped by theme at the level CSE-style items use, in our judgement, with a synonym and an opposite for each so you can practise both item types.

Are synonyms and antonyms on the civil service exam?

Vocabulary is part of the Verbal Ability scope per the 2026 announcement (confirm in the March 2027 announcement, which CSC says will state the scope). Synonym, antonym, idiom and word-in-context items are the usual formats in reviewer material, and the TalkDrill practice bank has keyed examples of each.

Is analogy under verbal ability or analytical ability?

Reviewers differ: some list word analogies under verbal ability and some under analytical ability, and we could not read the CSC scope pages this week to settle it. It does not change how you prepare. Analogies are won on word knowledge plus a clear relationship, so practise them with vocabulary, as on this page.

How do I answer analogy questions quickly?

Turn the first pair into a short sentence, such as "a baker makes bread", before you read the options. Then put each option into the same sentence: "a tailor makes clothes" works, "a tailor makes needles" does not. Check the direction too, because many traps reverse the pair. With practice, most analogies take under 30 seconds.

How many words should I learn each day?

Our suggestion, not a CSC rule: 20 a day for 15 days, then review. Say each word aloud in a sentence of your own, cover the meaning column to test yourself, and revisit each day's words on day 3 and day 7. Twenty words a day that you can use beats a hundred that you only recognise.

Does pronunciation matter in a written exam?

Not for the written items: the CSE-PPT is pen and paper with no speaking part. It matters in the panel interview many agencies hold after you are eligible, where words like bureaucracy and jurisdiction come up. Saying a word aloud also helps you remember it, which is why this page has a stress guide.

When is the next civil service exam?

Per CSC Examination Announcement No. 05, s. 2026, the next sitting is 14 March 2027, with applications from 2 November 2026 accepted until the 350,000 target slots fill and results targeted for 11 May 2027. The sitting after that is 8 August 2027, with applications from 10 May 2027.
