Can you buy a Versant test yourself?
Yes, but what you can buy is a practice test, not the employer's exam. The Pearson India store lists the "Versant English Test" at Rs 1,100 (read on 21 October 2026), and the same page says: "This test is for practice purposes only. If you require an official exam, please reach out to your institution or hiring company for further guidance." It is a full-length test, about 17 minutes and 63 questions, with a score report on the 10 to 90 Global Scale of English "within minutes". Pearson's global store lists the same product at USD 15, which is the price readers in the Philippines will see. The employer's Versant, like SHL's SVAR, the Harver Spoken Language Assessment and an employer's Berlitz test, is booked and paid for by the employer: none of those owners publishes a candidate fee. Retakes are the employer's call, because Pearson ties each test to a single-use code. And the result goes to the employer first; whether you see it depends on how they set up the test. One mistake to avoid: buying two practice tests to measure progress. Pearson says its tests are fixed forms, and a second purchase gives "the same questions".
- Versant practice test: Rs 1,100 (India store), USD 15 (global store). Employer's Versant test: paid by the employer.
- One test code, one attempt. A test "is considered used after it has been started" (Pearson FAQ).
- SVAR, Harver and employer Berlitz tests: no public candidate fee; the employer pays.
- Results: Versant within minutes; Berlitz Philippines within two business days; SVAR and Harver report to the employer.
- No owner publishes a retake waiting period. Ask the recruiter.
What the Rs 1,100 buys, line by line
Everything in this table is from the Versant English Test page on the Pearson India store, read on 21 October 2026.
| Item | What Pearson's store page says |
|---|---|
| Price | Rs 1,100.00. The global store lists it at USD 15.00. |
| What it is | Pearson calls it the Versant English Practice Test and says it "includes all of the test sections presented in a full exam". It is "for practice purposes only". |
| Length | About 17 minutes, 63 questions. Skill assessed: speaking. |
| Sections | Reading, Repeat, Short Answer Questions, Sentence Builds, Story Retelling, Open Questions. |
| Score | Overall and sub-skill scores from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English, with a description of your fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence mastery. |
| Report | "Available within minutes"; viewed by entering your Test Identification Number on Pearson's score lookup page. |
| Delivery | An email after purchase with instructions and a unique Test Identification Number (TIN). "Each TIN may only be used one time." |
| Device | Computer: Mac OS X 10.10 or later, or Windows; Firefox, Chrome or Edge. "Tablet OSs are not supported." USB headset recommended. |
| Rules | "Tests cannot be paused or restarted." "All sales are final." Tests are fixed forms: buy two and "you will receive the same questions". |
The India store sells five other Versant products at the same Rs 1,100 each: the Writing Test, the English Placement Test, the 4 Skills Essential Test, the Professional English Test and the English Speaking and Listening Test. For a BPO speaking round, the Versant English Test is the one that matches; Pearson's employer page lists its English Speaking and Listening Test at 17 minutes too. Our Versant guide explains which format a company is likely to send.
Should you buy the practice test?
Our view, not Pearson's: buy it once, if Rs 1,100 is easy for you, and take it two or three days before the employer's test. That leaves time to fix the weakest section it shows, and it is close enough that the score is a fair forecast. Do not buy it a month early and then again the week before. Because the store page says tests are fixed forms, the second attempt would be a memory test, not a measure of progress.
| Buy it if | Skip it if |
|---|---|
| You have never seen the six Versant tasks under real timing. | Your employer has already sent the real test link with a deadline of a day or two. Spend the time on drills instead. |
| You want a number to compare with a cut-off a recruiter mentioned. | You cannot use a computer with a headset; the practice test does not run on tablets. |
| Sentence Builds or Story Retelling scare you, and you want to feel the time pressure once. | You expected a certificate for your CV. It is not one. |
Free options first. Pearson's test-taker page links to official test guides and a free demo, and our practice bank has Versant-style items by task type that you can repeat as often as you like. Our read-aloud practice scores fluency and pronunciation on every attempt, which covers the Reading section and much of what the Repeat section listens for.
Booking and test day: there are no test dates
None of these tests has a calendar. Versant, SVAR, Harver and Berlitz all run on demand, from a link or a call that the employer arranges. Pearson's employer page describes "fully flexible test administration and proctoring choices", so a company can have you test at home or at its centre. Berlitz Philippines says testing runs "24 hours a day, seven days a week, online or over the phone". The dates block on this page shows the Versant row for that reason: on demand, online.
- At home. Use a laptop or desktop with a wired or USB headset, in a quiet room. Pearson's store lists the browsers and recommends a USB headset; Concentrix's FAQ adds that work-from-home candidates also get an internet speed and system check.
- At the centre. Bring ID, arrive early, and ask for a seat away from the door if you can. If others are testing in the same room, keep a steady volume rather than raising your voice over them.
- On a phone (Berlitz, sometimes). Full signal, a charged battery and a closed door. Ask once for a repeat if you miss a question.
Open the link only when you can finish. Pearson counts a test as used once it is started, and Concentrix warns that with its Harver modules "once you open the module, the clock starts ticking".
Retakes, per Pearson, SHL, Harver and Berlitz
| Test | What the owner says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Versant (employer test) | "Once you make an attempt to use your TIN it cannot be used again." For a replacement, "contact the person who administered your test. The test administrator will determine if another test can be distributed." (Pearson FAQ) | A retake is the employer's decision. If your connection failed mid-test, tell the recruiter the same day and ask for a new TIN. |
| Versant (practice test you bought) | "All sales are final." Buying again gives "the same questions". | You can buy another, but it will not tell you much. |
| SVAR | SHL's product page publishes no retake rule. | Employer's decision. |
| Harver | No retake rule published. Concentrix: "you are always welcome to apply to Concentrix again after being rejected for a role". | Reapply; ask the recruiter how long to wait. |
| Berlitz (employer test) | No retake rule published by Berlitz Philippines. | Employer's decision. |
Prep sites quote waiting periods for retakes at particular companies. We have not found any of them on an official page, so we do not repeat them. Use the gap, whatever it is, to fix one thing: the 7-day plan is built for a second attempt as much as a first.
How results reach the employer
| Test | How fast | Who sees it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Versant | "Usually available online within minutes" | The employer, on its Pearson dashboard ("track results through your admin dashboard"). You, by TIN on the score lookup page, unless the administrator has restricted it. | Pearson score lookup |
| SVAR | Not stated as a time; SHL says "fast, consistent results" | "Hiring teams receive a clear report showing performance across key language metrics." | SHL SVAR page |
| Harver | Automatic scoring; no time stated | The employer: a percentile with IELTS and CEFR references, which Harver says employers can share "in the most relevant standard with clients". | Harver Spoken Language page |
| Berlitz (Philippines) | "Within two business days" | The employer that booked the test. | Berlitz Philippines testing |
| Berlitz (US pages) | AI speaking "within 30 minutes"; human-rated English speaking "1 business day" | The buyer, or the organisation that booked it. | Berlitz US BPO testing page |
Notice what this means for a BPO applicant. The client of the BPO, not only the BPO, may see your result: Harver says its reports let employers share results "in the most relevant standard with clients". In our reading, that is one reason the bar can differ between two accounts in the same building. Our scores and cut-offs page explains the scales and why no cut-off is official.
Why SVAR, Harver and Berlitz are employer-paid
These are hiring tools, sold to companies. Their pages are written for recruiters: SHL lists SVAR's uses as contact centres, helpdesks, telesales and client-facing roles; Harver's page talks about helping "your recruiters" shortlist; Berlitz's BPO page talks about hiring, transfers and promotions. A company buys tests in volume, sets the cut-off for each account, and sends links to the applicants it wants to assess. That is why there is nothing for a candidate to buy, and why the employer, not you, decides retakes.
Two exceptions are worth knowing. Berlitz's US store sells its speaking tests to the public: the Speaking Test for Workplace Communication at USD 65 and the AI-Rated Speaking Test for Professionals at USD 25, as listed on 21 October 2026. And in India, AMCAT sells MyEnglish, a speaking, writing and listening test with a "Spoken English Proficiency Certificate", at Rs 850, or Rs 550 with AMCAT. Both are real products, but neither replaces the test your employer sends. Buy them only if a specific employer tells you it accepts them.

Red flags: when someone asks you to pay
Because employers pay for these tests, a request to pay for "your Versant slot" or "the SVAR registration" from someone claiming to recruit for a BPO deserves suspicion. Check the sender against the company's official careers site before you send money or documents. Teleperformance's US careers page, for example, says "TP hiring managers will only contact you from a @Teleperformance.com email address" and that "TP does not use or communicate via Telegram".
- A real Versant invitation from an employer comes with a Test Identification Number; you do not buy one from a third party.
- A Harver, SHL or Berlitz link arrives from the employer's hiring process, not from a personal chat account.
- A "guaranteed pass" or a "leaked answer key" is a sign of a scam. The store practice test is a fixed form, but nothing on Pearson's pages says an employer's test uses the same questions, and Harver and Berlitz say their tests can be customised per employer.
If you want to spend money, spend it on practice that moves your score. Our AI BPO voice interview and the drills in the practice bank cover every task these tests use. For the whole picture, the BPO English tests hub compares all four.
