Placement English for engineering colleges
Engineering students meet English early in mass-recruiter drives: Accenture, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra are reported to run spoken communication rounds that can end a candidate’s process, HCLTech and Deloitte to use Versant, Wipro sets a written essay, and TCS, Infosys and Capgemini test written English. TalkDrill prepares a whole batch for those rounds and the HR interview, and shows the placement cell readiness by batch, section or department.
English in reported 2025–26 mass-recruiter processes
Accenture
A communication assessment comes first in the reported process: AI-graded, around 63 questions in six sections, covering sentence mastery, vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation, and it can end the process before any technical round.
Cognizant (GenC)
A reported communication assessment of 60 questions in about 58 minutes: reading sentences aloud, repeating sentences, rearranging jumbled sentences, answering spoken questions and two short storytelling tasks.
Tech Mahindra
An AI communication round is reported after aptitude: listen and repeat, read aloud, fill in the blank, spot the error, answer listening questions, and talk on a topic for about 45 seconds.
HCLTech
Reported to use Pearson’s Versant spoken-English test after the cognitive and coding rounds. The cut-off score is not published.
Deloitte
Reported to include a Versant voice test of about 20 minutes in its selection process.
Wipro (Elite NLTH)
A 20-minute essay of 200 to 300 words sits beside aptitude and coding in the reported test, and a weak essay can eliminate a candidate.
Capgemini
A reported English section of 30 questions in 30 minutes, alongside pseudocode, game-based cognitive tasks and a behavioural section.
TCS (NQT)
A written verbal section of 25 questions in 25 minutes in the reported test; spoken clarity is then judged in the interviews.
Infosys
A verbal section of roughly 15 to 20 questions in the reported online test, followed by technical and HR interviews.
These descriptions are of recruiters’ publicly reported processes for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Recruiters change their rounds without notice, so treat the invite your students receive as the final word.
What TalkDrill practises for each kind of round
Spoken screens
The recruiter-style speaking round in the placement test (read aloud, repeat once, answer listening questions) and pronunciation and fluency scores on every spoken session.
Essays and written English
Emails and essays scored on task response, organisation, grammar, vocabulary, mechanics and tone, plus the English Grammar Basics course.
HR and managerial interviews
AI mock interviews with a scored report, a six-minute recruiter phone screen and a Story Bank of STAR answers built from the student’s own experiences.
Group discussions
An AI group discussion scored on five criteria, and batch-mate GDs when faculty book them.
For the training and placement cell
Placement calendar and drive sprints
Add a company drive with its date and the eligible batches, and those students’ plans switch to a seven-day drive sprint with a countdown on Home. Afterwards, record each student’s outcome and see it next to their readiness band.
Seniors as interviewers
Flag placed seniors and they can run their company’s mock round for juniors. The AI scores the junior and the senior’s listening, and the questions seniors recall go into a question bank only your college sees, once staff approve them.
CO/PO and accreditation exports
Map the seven skills to your course outcomes once, then export CO/PO attainment and NBA, NAAC, NIRF and AICTE appendix tables, each with its denominators and sources — labelled as evidence for faculty and IQAC review, not a compliance claim.
Readiness by student and by batch
One readiness picture per student across seven skill families, with coverage shown: a skill not yet assessed says so and is never scored zero. Next to it, when they last practised and how their scores have moved — rolled up per batch, section or department.
What TalkDrill does not cover
TalkDrill practises English: speaking, writing, interviews and group discussions. It does not teach aptitude, coding or technical subjects, so it sits alongside whatever your college uses for those rounds.
