When results arrive, format by format
For IELTS on Computer, the format almost every Indian candidate now sits, results take 1 to 5 days per the ielts.org results page, and IDP India's own results page says "within 1 to 2 days". You see the bands in the IDP candidate login; IDP's global results page adds that online results "are provisional only until you receive your official Test Report Form". A One Skill Retake, Speaking included, takes 3 to 5 days per ielts.org and "within 2 days" per IDP India. Everything else on this page, the TRF, the re-mark and the retake, hangs off those few days, so here they are in one table, each with its source.
| Format | ielts.org (20 Oct 2026) | IDP India (20 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS on Computer (Academic or General Training) | 1 to 5 days | Within 1 to 2 days; "most results within 2 days" |
| IELTS Writing on Paper | Not listed separately | "Typically within 2 days", sometimes within 1 day |
| IELTS for UKVI (computer) | 1 to 5 days | Not stated on the pages we read |
| IELTS Life Skills | Up to 9 days | 7 days after the test |
| IELTS on paper (discontinued in India per IDP) | Not listed on the current page | 7 days; UKVI on paper 13 days |
| One Skill Retake | 3 to 5 days | Within 2 days |
Where the two sources differ, plan on the slower figure and be pleased if the faster one happens. Speaking does not come out separately or later than the other three; the four bands and the overall band appear together.
How to check results and send them to organisations
- Candidate login. IDP India's results page: go to the candidate login, enter your username and password, and the scores appear under "Declared Result". ielts.org describes the login as your passport or ID number, the one you registered with, plus your candidate number.
- The eTRF. IDP India says the digital scorecard is available through the candidate portal and that physical TRFs "are rarely issued, as results are now digitized". If an organisation insists on paper, ask the centre; IDP calls these Additional TRFs, and the IDP fee page prices electronic reports beyond the first five at INR 350 each.
- Sending to universities and regulators. IDP India: "send up to five electronic score reports free of cost to recognised institutions directly through the candidate portal", delivered instantly. Beyond five, the IDP fee page lists INR 350 per university. ielts.org puts it the same way globally: five organisations by post free of charge, a processing fee after that, and e-delivery through the IELTS Results Service "with as many organisations as you like".
- Keep the TRF number. It is the key that organisations use to verify you, and the number you quote for an Enquiry on Results or a One Skill Retake.
If you are reading this before the test, the practical point is to list the organisations now, with the exact name each uses in the IELTS system, so that the five free reports go out on the day the result lands.
The Test Report Form: what is on it, how long it lasts, how it is verified
The TRF carries your four skill bands, the overall band, the test type, the date and the centre, and your photograph. Speaking is one line of the four. Three facts about it matter more than they seem.
Validity
The ielts.org score page says "We recommend that IELTS test results are considered valid for two years after a test has been taken", and organisations set their own acceptance windows. The two years run from the test date, not the result date. For regulators with long processing times, such as nursing registration, check which date they count.
Rounding, since it decides retakes
The same page: the four criteria in Speaking carry equal weighting and the average gives the Speaking band; the overall band averages the four skills, with .25 rounding up to the next half band and .75 up to the next whole band. So an overall 6.75 reports as 7.0. That rule is why a half band in Speaking can move the overall score, and why the One Skill Retake exists. Our plain-English band descriptors explainer covers what each half band sounds like.
Verification
Organisations do not take your PDF on trust. The ielts.org verification page describes the IELTS Results Service as "secure, free, and simple to use": the organisation looks up your TRF number and sees the identity and the scores. ielts.org says it cannot investigate TRFs more than three years old. An edited scorecard is caught at this step, so the only route to a better number is a re-mark or a retake.
Enquiry on Results: the re-mark, and when Speaking is worth re-marking
An Enquiry on Results (EOR) is a re-mark. Per the ielts.org policies page, "test papers are re-marked by senior Examiners/Markers" and the outcome "can become available on the same day as your application and up to 21 days after your application". Because the Speaking test is recorded, a Speaking re-mark means a senior examiner listens to your whole 11 to 14 minutes again against the public descriptors.
| Item | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| How to apply | Online, in the candidate login, under the EOR tab. "We are no longer accepting physical (offline) applications for EOR." | IDP India EOR page |
| Fee | INR 14,250 (IELTS on Computer and Writing on Paper); INR 14,400 UKVI; INR 13,500 Life Skills; INR 9,450 for a One Skill Retake result | IDP India EOR and fee pages |
| Refund | "You will receive a full refund of the EOR fee, if your result is changed to a higher band score." | IDP India EOR page |
| Time | 2 to 3 weeks in most cases, up to 4 in rare instances (IDP); same day to 21 days (ielts.org) | IDP India fee page; ielts.org policies page |
| Deadline | Not printed on the IDP India or ielts.org pages we read on 20 October 2026. Apply in the first days after the result and ask IDP for the cut-off in writing. | Our note |
When a Speaking re-mark is worth INR 14,250 (TalkDrill judgement)
- Worth considering: you are exactly half a band short in Speaking only, your other three bands are at or above target, and you spoke at length in Part 2 and Part 3 without drying up. Re-marks move scores when the first examiner's judgement sat on a boundary; a half band is a boundary.
- Usually not: you need a full band or more, or you know Part 2 ran short or Part 3 produced one-sentence answers. A re-mark cannot add language you did not produce. The money goes further on a One Skill Retake, which costs less (INR 12,650) and lets you perform again.
- Timing trap: the retake clock, 60 days from the original test, keeps running while a re-mark is pending. If you might need both, book the retake slot first and let the EOR run alongside it; if the EOR succeeds, the retake cancellation rule (at least 4 days' notice, 25% deducted, IDP fee page) limits the loss.
One Skill Retake: every rule in one table
The One Skill Retake (OSR) is the single most useful change to IELTS for a candidate whose only problem is Speaking. Every rule below is from the ielts.org One Skill Retake page or the IDP India OSR page, both read on 20 October 2026.
| Rule | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Who can book | Only if "your full test was an IELTS on computer test". IDP India: "Currently available only for IELTS on Computer", Academic and General Training. | ielts.org; IDP India |
| Window | ielts.org: you must "sit your IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your full IELTS test". IDP India: "Book your OSR within 60 days of your original IELTS test." Both count from the test date, not from the result. | ielts.org; IDP India |
| How many | Once per original test. IDP India: "You can only complete one retake for each full IELTS test." | ielts.org; IDP India |
| Fee in India | INR 12,650 | IDP India OSR and fee pages |
| What you sit | Only the chosen skill. For Speaking, the same 11 to 14 minute, three-part interview with an examiner. | ielts.org format pages |
| Results | 3 to 5 days (ielts.org); within 2 days (IDP India) | Both |
| Your TRF | "You will receive a new Test Report Form. This includes your updated IELTS One Skill Retake score as well as the results for the other three skills in the original test." You may use the original TRF or the new one. | ielts.org; IDP India |
| Who accepts it | IDP India names the Australian Department of Home Affairs, AHPRA, more than 50 Australian universities, Immigration New Zealand, and UKVI for SELT purposes. ielts.org: UKVI acceptance is for computer tests "in selected locations"; "check with the organisation directly ... before booking your test". | IDP India; ielts.org |
| Who does not | The NMC (UK nurses and midwives): "We do not accept the IELTS One Skill Retake test. This is because you must be tested in all four domains at the same time to use this evidence type." IRCC: "We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry." Both read 20 October 2026. | NMC IELTS Academic page; IRCC language-testing page |
| Moving or cancelling it | Transfer INR 3,200; cancel with at least 4 days' notice, 25% deducted. | IDP India fee page |
| Re-marking it | EOR on a retake result: INR 9,450 | IDP India fee page |
How to book: IDP India says to log into the candidate portal and "simply click on the 'Retake' button for that skill of the test". The button appears once the original result is declared. Fees and booking for the full test are on our fees and booking page.
Is a Speaking retake worth it? A decision table
The cases below are the common ones for Indian candidates aiming at Band 6.5 to 8 for the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The recommendations are TalkDrill's judgement; the rules they rest on are the official ones above.
| Your result | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking 0.5 short, other three at target, computer test, within 60 days | One Skill Retake, booked now for about four weeks out | INR 12,650 against INR 19,000; you keep three good scores; a half band in Speaking is usually control and length, which four weeks of daily aloud practice can fix. |
| Speaking 1.0 or more short, other three at target | One Skill Retake, but use the whole 60 days, and be honest on day 0 | A full band is a different level of fluency and grammar, not a bad day. Record a mock on day 0 and mark it against the descriptors; if the gap is real, six to eight weeks of work beats a fast rebook. |
| Speaking 0.5 short and you spoke fully in every part | Consider an Enquiry on Results, and book the retake slot anyway | Boundary cases do move on re-mark and the fee returns if the band rises; the retake protects you if it does not. |
| Two or more skills short | Full test, INR 19,000 | The One Skill Retake covers one skill only, once. |
| Original test on paper, or more than 60 days ago, or retake already used | Full test | Not eligible for the One Skill Retake. |
| The organisation does not accept the One Skill Retake (the NMC and IRCC Express Entry say so on their pages) | Full test, or confirm in writing first | A new TRF the regulator will not read is wasted money. |
| Overall band is the problem, not Speaking | Retake the skill with the most headroom, which is often Speaking | The overall band rounds from the four-skill average; lifting any one skill by a full band can carry the overall across a .25 or .75 boundary. |
A worked timeline from test day to retake result
This example is written by TalkDrill to show the arithmetic; it is not a real candidate's record. Suppose you sit IELTS on Computer in Jalandhar on Saturday 7 November 2026.
- 7 November 2026: test day. Speaking is the same day for computer tests (IDP registration page).
- By 12 November: result, using the slower ielts.org figure of 5 days. Say Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5, overall 7.0, against a target of 7 in every skill.
- 12 to 14 November: decide. One skill short by half a band, computer test, within 60 days: the One Skill Retake applies. Book it in the candidate portal with the Retake button.
- Deadline for sitting the retake: 6 January 2027, which is 60 days after 7 November. Book for mid-December, leaving about four weeks of preparation and a margin for a transfer.
- Retake on 12 December: an 11 to 14 minute Speaking test, nothing else.
- By 17 December: retake result, on the ielts.org 3 to 5 day figure. A new TRF shows the new Speaking band with the original three; you send that one.
Notice what the timeline does not include: waiting for a "next date". IDP runs the computer test up to seven days a week, so the only clock that matters is the 60 days.
Preparing for a Speaking-only retake
A retake is the rare exam where you know exactly which paper you will face: three parts, one examiner, 11 to 14 minutes. Use the time accordingly.
- Find the half band. The four criteria carry equal weight (ielts.org). Record a full mock on our free Speaking practice test and mark yourself on each criterion against the public descriptors. In our judgement Indian candidates most often lose the half band on Fluency and coherence (hesitation mid-sentence, short Part 3 answers) or on Pronunciation (word stress, v and w, th); our page on common mistakes Indian students make lists them with fixes.
- Drill the part that broke. If Part 2 ran under ninety seconds, work the cue-card families in our 2026 cue cards until two minutes feels short. If Part 3 produced single sentences, use the Part 3 discussion topics and answer each in four moves: position, reason, example, limit.
- Follow a dated plan. Our 30-day Band 7 plan, linked below, assumes you hold a date; a retake candidate already does.
- Practise on camera. IDP India says the computer test's Speaking is by video call with a certified examiner at the venue. Do at least three mocks with your camera on so the screen is familiar.
- Do not change your English. Memorised idioms and new "band 8 phrases" learnt in four weeks tend to lower Lexical resource, because examiners mark appropriacy, not rarity; the Band 7 tips page explains what examiners reward instead.
Every page in this module is kept to the official pages named above and re-checked weekly; the verified date is on the IELTS Speaking hub. If IDP or ielts.org changes a figure on this page, the hub changelog will say so.
