300 Daily Use English Words With Hindi Meaning (For Everyday Speaking)

If you can understand English but freeze the moment you have to speak, the problem is almost never grammar. It's the small set of words you can pull up instantly. Speak fluently and you're mostly reusing a few hundred everyday words in different orders. This guide gives you 300 daily use English words with their Hindi meaning in Devanagari, grouped by real situations, each with a short example so you know exactly how to use it.

A quick truth first. You do not need thousands of words to hold a normal conversation. You need the right few hundred, used automatically. Limited English fluency can hold back career growth, and for many learners, the gap is these everyday words sitting unused in memory.

This post covers words. If you're looking for full ready-made lines, our companion guide on daily-use sentences with Hindi meaning stitches these words into complete sentences you can copy and speak.

Key Takeaways

  • 300 high-frequency English words grouped into 10 everyday themes, each with a Devanagari Hindi meaning and an example sentence.
  • You need roughly a few hundred common words, not thousands, to speak comfortably; many fluency gaps come from weak everyday vocabulary, not grammar.
  • The retention trick isn't more lists — it's using each word in your own sentence and reviewing it on a spacing schedule.
  • Learn 10 words a day and you'll finish all 300 in a month, if you actually speak them out loud.

Quick List: 30 Daily Use English Words With Hindi Meaning

If you need 30 word meanings for homework or a quick revision, start here. These are 30 words you will hear and use almost every day, each with its Hindi meaning and a short example in both languages. The full 300, grouped by situation, follow below.

Two meanings people often look up first: "daily use" means रोज़मर्रा के इस्तेमाल का, that is, something you use every day. "Daily" on its own means दैनिक or रोज़ का, and "vocabulary" means शब्दावली, the set of words you know.

Why learn English words with Hindi meaning instead of English-only?

Because a Hindi anchor makes a new word stick faster when Hindi is the language you think in. When you attach "grateful" to आभारी, your brain files it next to a feeling you already know, so recall is quicker than memorising an English-to-English definition you have to translate anyway.

There's a catch, though, and it decides whether this list actually helps you. A Hindi meaning is a bridge, not a home. If you always route through Hindi before you speak — hear the question, translate to Hindi, form the answer in Hindi, translate back to English — your speech will stay slow and stiff. The goal is to use the Hindi meaning to learn the word, then drop the crutch and reach for the English word directly. Our guide on how to start thinking in English explains how to make that switch happen naturally.

So use these tables like this. Read the English word, glance at the Hindi meaning to lock it in, then say the example sentence aloud. After a day or two, cover the Hindi column and test yourself with English only.

Feelings and emotions (30 words)

Being able to name a feeling in English is what makes you sound like a real speaker, not a textbook. The EF English Proficiency Index (2024) places India in the moderate band, and emotional expression is usually the weakest area for Indian learners — so these words carry a lot of weight.

Tip: Bargain in English once this week, even if the shopkeeper replies in Hindi. "Any discount? This is expensive." Half the sentence is enough to build the habit.

Common verbs you'll use most (30 words)

Make बनाना I make tea for everyone.

Useful describing words and connectors (20 words)

Describing words and small connectors are what turn choppy, one-word answers into smooth sentences. These are the finishing touches that make you sound natural.

English Hindi Meaning Example Sentence
Good अच्छा This is a good idea.
Bad बुरा The weather is bad.
Big बड़ा It's a big city.
Small छोटा I have a small doubt.
New नया I bought a new phone.
Old पुराना This is an old building.
Easy आसान The test was easy.
Difficult मुश्किल English feels difficult at first.
Important महत्वपूर्ण This is very important.
Beautiful सुंदर What a beautiful place!
Fast तेज़ He speaks too fast.
Slow धीमा Please speak a bit slow.

But लेकिन I tried, but I failed.
Also भी I want tea, also some water.

Never कभी नहीं I never skip practice.

Tip: The connectors "because" and "but" instantly upgrade your speech. Instead of "I'm late," say "I'm late because of traffic." One extra word, and you sound far more fluent.

10 Word Pairs That Hindi Speakers Often Mix Up

Some English pairs share a single Hindi word, so the Hindi meaning alone cannot tell you which one to use. These ten come up again and again in everyday speech. Learn them as pairs, with the example, and the confusion goes away.

PairHindi meaningUse it like this
Borrow / Lendउधार लेना / उधार देनाCan I borrow your notes? Can you lend me your notes?
Bring / Takeलाना / ले जानाBring your umbrella here. Take your umbrella to college.
Say / Tellकहना / बतानाHe said he was busy. He told me he was busy.
Listen / Hearध्यान से सुनना / सुनाई देनाListen to the teacher. I can't hear you, the line is bad.

Lose / Looseखोना / ढीलाDon't lose your phone. This shirt is loose.
Quiet / Quiteशांत / काफ़ीPlease be quiet. The test was quite easy.
Then / Thanतब / से (तुलना में)Finish lunch, then call me. She is taller than me.
Advice / Adviseसलाह / सलाह देनाThanks for the advice. I advise you to rest.
Cloth / Clothesकपड़े का टुकड़ा / पहनने के कपड़ेWipe it with a cloth. I bought new clothes.

The one we hear most in India is "Please borrow me your pen." It should be "Please lend me your pen." You borrow; the other person lends.

How do you actually remember 300 words?

You remember them by using each word in your own sentence and reviewing it before you forget — not by reading the list again. Reading is recognition; you need recall, and recall only grows when you retrieve a word from memory under a little pressure.

Here's the method that works for Indian learners juggling college or a job. Learn 10 words a day, not 300 at once. For each word, do three things: say the meaning, build one original sentence about your own life (not the example given), and speak it out loud. If you commit to this, our companion routine on how to learn 10 words a day turns it into a simple daily habit.

Then review on a spacing schedule. Research summarised by SAGE Journals (2025) shows that spaced, interactive practice improves long-term retention far more than cramming. A simple schedule looks like this.

Review When What to do
Review 1 Same evening Cover the Hindi column, recall each word
Review 2 Next day Use 5 of the words in a real conversation
Review 3 After 3 days Write 5 fresh sentences from memory
Review 4 After 1 week Speak for one minute using that day's words

Words you don't revisit fade, and that's fine. The ones you use in real conversation become permanent. That's why speaking beats silent reading every time.

One more thing that speeds this up: talk to someone. If you don't have a partner, practise these words in a spoken conversation with an AI tutor on TalkDrill, which never judges your pronunciation, so you can attempt words out loud without fear. Even ten minutes of real speaking a day moves these words from "I recognise it" to "it comes out automatically." AI-assisted speaking practice roughly doubled learning gains versus traditional self-study in a 2025 Harvard study published in Nature.

If you like learning words in themed sets, there is a seasonal one ready: the 60 Halloween words in English, grouped into things, creatures, actions, describing words and feelings, each with a sentence to say out loud, plus the idioms (a skeleton in the cupboard, a ghost town, the graveyard shift) that English speakers use in offices every week of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many English words do I need to speak fluently?

You need far fewer than most people think. A few hundred high-frequency words cover the majority of everyday conversation, which is exactly why this list stops at 300. Fluency comes less from a huge vocabulary and more from using a small core set automatically. Learn these 300 well, speak them daily, and you can handle almost any casual or work situation.

Should I learn words in Hindi Devanagari or Roman script?

Use whichever you read faster. This list uses Devanagari because it's precise and unambiguous for meaning, while our sentences guide uses Roman Hindi for quick reading. What matters more than the script is dropping the Hindi crutch over time. Use the meaning to learn the word, then aim to reach the English word directly without translating in your head.

How long will it take to learn all 300 words?

At 10 words a day with proper review, about a month. But learning to recognise them and being able to speak them are two different milestones. Recognising takes weeks; speaking them without hesitation takes daily out-loud practice on top of that. Don't rush the list. It's better to fully own 10 words a day than to skim all 300 in a weekend and forget them.

Is it enough to just read this list, or do I have to speak?

Reading alone won't get you speaking. Silent reading builds recognition, but conversation needs recall, and recall only strengthens when you retrieve and say a word out loud. Build one original sentence per word, speak it, and use the day's words in a real chat. Speaking practice, even ten minutes daily, is what turns a word list into actual fluency.

What's the difference between this and your daily-use sentences post?

This post teaches individual words with Hindi meanings so you can build your own sentences. The daily-use sentences with Hindi meaning guide gives you complete, ready-made lines for specific situations like shops, offices, and phone calls. Use them together: learn the words here, then see them combined into full sentences there. For the most common conversation words specifically, our most-used conversation words guide goes deeper.

What is the meaning of "daily use" in Hindi?

"Daily use" का मतलब है रोज़मर्रा के इस्तेमाल का, यानी जो चीज़ या शब्द हम हर दिन इस्तेमाल करते हैं। So "daily use English words" are the English words you need every day: greetings, common verbs, and words for food, travel, money and feelings.

Which English words are used the most?

By raw frequency, the top of every English word list is short grammar words. The Oxford English Corpus count is led by the, be, to, of, and, a, in, that, have and I, and you already know all of them. For speaking, the words that make the biggest difference are the common verbs (go, get, take, make, need, want) and the polite words (please, sorry, excuse me), which is why they appear early in the tables above.

How many new English words should I learn in a day?

Ten is a good number for most learners. It is small enough to say each word out loud in a sentence of your own and review it the next day. Fifty in one sitting feels productive, but many of them fade within a week unless you use them.

Start with 10 words today

You now have 300 daily use English words with their Hindi meaning, grouped into the exact situations you face every day. The list is only useful if it leaves this page and enters your mouth. Knowing a word and being able to say it under pressure are two very different things, and only speaking closes that gap.

So do this before you close the tab. Pick any 10 words from one table. Say each meaning, build one sentence about your own life, and speak it aloud. Then use at least two of them in a real conversation today, even mixed with Hindi. That single habit, repeated daily, will teach you more than reading this entire post again. Aaj se shuru kariye.

If you want a speaking partner who never judges, practise these words in real conversations on TalkDrill for free daily practice. Save the ones that keep slipping away to your Word Bank for flashcard review, or test yourself with the free Word Power game.
